Hi, I am filling out the G325A form for my wife. The problem is my wifes mother did not have a last maiden name in Indonesia. I put the word none where it asks for my wifes maiden name. Should have I put N/A or none or leave it blank. I am afraid they might think her last name is none. Thanks for any advise. Jeff n Merry

Hello there! Don't leave it blank. I think the best option would be to put N/A.

So your wife or her mother only had a first name growing up? Whatever last name your WIFE had growing up is her "maiden" name. Same goes with her mother. Whatever last name she had growing up was her maiden name (the last name she had before marriage.) If she did not have one I'm not sure if it is better to put n/a or none because the question is applicable.

Mononym are very common for Indonesian's names and USCIS is very aware of this. On our G325A form, we put (No Last Name) in the Family Name box. It's acceptable.

It is also acceptable to put dashes in that filed, like this: --------

Thanks everyone. I was going with N/A but now no last name sounds good and explains it. The customs of 1/2 way around the world are different. I like so many of them but some are really different like no last names. How could they ever do a census to get the population with so many people with the same first name? My wifes father has a last name but my wife said her mothers name stayed the same as before married. And her brothers and sisters do not have a last name. Some sisters have one name but my wife has a second name nad some brothers have a second name. I know another Indonesian woman that came here with only one name. I am gonna go over the form again before finishing it. I am helping her brother fill it out because she does not know how to use a computer. Then I am getting her brother to print out 5 copies and send me 3 copies with her signing each one. I can send one in with the I-130 and my G325A and pictures plus other info. I wish I could get someone here to check it for mistakes. I don't really want to post it to the whole internet. thanks everyone. Jeff n Merry

Mononyms are also common in Indonesia. In some cases such as former Presidents Sukarno and Suharto, the mononyms are their full legal name, as often found among Javanese people of common birth. Others like Rossa, Chrisye or Tohpati are stage names taken from a nickname or part of their full names.

Single names still also occur in Tibet[13] and Mongolia.[citation needed] Most Afghans have no surname

I was curious about what a mononym meaning is.
