John Koster, a Republican running for Congress in Washington, became the latest candidate to opine on abortion exceptions in cases of rape and incest over the weekend at a fundraiser with Rep. Tom Price (R-GA). Koster said he would support abortion only if the woman's life was in danger, but would not extend the same right to women who are survivors of incest or "the rape thing," as he casually termed it. To justify his opposition, Koster insisted that incest is rare and argued that abortion would only further hurt rape survivors:

Incest is so rare, I mean, it's
so
rare. But the rape thing…you know, I know a woman who was raped and kept her child, gave it up for adoption, she doesn't regret it.
In fact, she's a big pro-life proponent. But on the rape thing, it's like, how does putting more violence onto a woman's body and taking the life of an innocent child that's the consequence of this crime, how does that make it better? You know what I mean?

Steve why are you at war with your church on this matter?

This guy seems to believe what even the whole of Christianity have always believed and that is "life is sacred" no one has the right to take it except to prevent a greater evil.

Heck even the Hippocratic oath that doctors swear to forbids it.

It is shameless to use women as implements of political war.

Come home to your faith Steve we await you.

You're right, Danno. It is a faith decision and a personal one. And for the record, the Catholic Church is opposed to ALL abortions except where mother's life is in danger. So even a young girl who gets raped by her father, the Church would say that is not a reason to have an abortion. These Republican candidates know they can't say that because no one would vote for them.

No, it's not just a "faith decision" anymore than Churches being against Slavery was a faith issue. Sometimes faith is reason enough to take a stand but for many people they realize we are talking about human life... with it's own DNA

and if you would not give a criminal the Electric chair with out a great certainty of guilt and with much reflection ....and regulation so we should be slow to extinguish any Human life form. (MOst especially the Innocent)

This commitment to humanity is not shacked to religion in the least, nor should it be private and personal.

I find the Republican parties stance against a woman's reproductive systems rights equally offensive as I find the Democratic parties stance on my choice as to how I spend my hard earned money. I find denying birth control just as offensive as forcing your neighbor to pay for it,

It IS a personal, moral decision. Unless the government has a clear reason to be involved, morality and moral decisions should be made by the individual in a free society! Why are you so opposed to freedom? If your faith forbids abortion than don't have one under any circumstance. But what gives you the idea that you are so special you can start making moral decisions for other people?

Issues of laws and legality pertain to 'persons' and that is not a legal status that embryos and zygotes have.

You know we hear these same vacuous positions from people who really must know better so whats to be said when the reality of Law, tradition and science can some how be dumbed down to a slogan such as "freedom">?

Okay whatever, the Supreme court and many states have already "trampled" all over freedom by restricting abortions and even setting up limits to how and when they can be done.

In your mind it's a "personal" thing but the Law says something completely otherwise.

If you care to wade into a real conversation, debate what those limits are and what you think they should be because your concept of abortion=freedom is silly. (and a little beneath you of all people).

It's a shame that the first amendment treats the issue of separation of church and state in terms of freedom of religion. It really should have focused more on freedom from religion.

Bet you would..... then folks like you and Obama could decide what Rights are allowable.

If it will make you feel better, there are a number of countries which have the exact model you long for.... ours on the other hand in unique in that way.

Why can't these people shut up about rape? Haven't enough of them said something stupid about the topic yet?

Steller observation!

I guess when one is ginning up a "war on women" theme for the 2012 campaign

These questions will be asked again and again until the sound-bite is given.

So it's someone else's fault that these men insist on making these ridiculously offensive statements?
