Yes you can travel with your expired green card and the extension letter. If you want to you can make an infopass with the nearest USCIS to you and have them stamp the passport for you. I heard that they don't do that anymore but if you wanna give it a shot go ahead. To be honest with you I didn't have no experience yet about traveling with the extension letter as my green card expires in december and my nearest travel date is in June. Good luck

Once you have that extension letter, it's no longer "expired." You can't file the I-751 (removal of conditions) until 90 days before the 2-year green card expires, but it takes USCIS way longer than 90 days to process the I-751 and issue a 10-year (permanent) green card. That's why you get an automatic 1-year extension on your I-751 NOA1 that specifically states that it's valid for employment and travel.

To the OP's question, my wife's 2-year GC was set to expire in March and she and our daughter traveled to Korea in June with her "expired" GC and extension letter. I joined her two weeks later and we came back together at the end of July. Absolutely no issues at POE. You definitely want to bring the original letter, as the airline will want to see it when you check in to return to the US. To be honest though, I don't even remember the CBP inspector looking at the letter; I'm pretty sure the extended validity came up on his screen right away when he scanned her "expired" GC.

Improved USCIS Form G-325A (Biographic Information)

Form field input font changed to allow entry of dates in the specified format and to provide more space for addresses and employment history. This is the 6/12/09 version of the form; the current version is 8/8/11, but previous versions are accepted per the USCIS forms page.

I travel to Canada on a weekly basis with my extension letter and expired green card. I haven't been hassled at all. I have gotten comments like they still haven't gotten you your new card, they have to be slow I am seeing a lot more of these letters, but nothing more than that. I am treated the same way I was with just the card.

Removal of Conditions: 12/09/2011

ROC check cashed 12/15/11

NOA1 12/13/11

Biometrics 1/6/12 Complete

RFE 9/13/12

RFE package sent back 10/17/12

Card Production Ordered 12/04/12

10 year card arrived in mail 12/10/12

I didn't have any issues travelling to Canada this way. The customs officials know what the letter is. There were no extra questions, no trips to secondary, or anything out of the ordinary. As long as you have the original letter with you (not just a copy) you should have no problem!

That's great to hear, I will be going to Canada... Glad it's a normal process.

Also no issues for me at POE, but the airline people sometimes asks questions, if the person you're dealing with doesn't understand the paperwork, just go to a supervisor. You must carry the ORIGINAL extension letter though, I read somewhere that another member's wife had issues when she only had a copy of it with her.

  • 2 weeks later...

You should be fine. My conditional green card expired in March this year. I was in the Philippines in April and May. It was convenient getting through LAX. The officer didn't even ask for my extension letter after swiping my physically expired green card.
