i have my CR1 visa and am already in the USA (2 weeks ago). I'm having some maiden name vs married name issues. My SSN has my maiden name on it because I didn't change my Canadian passport to my married name before the interview. My canadian passport still has 3 years valid on it and I didn't see the need to change it

I'm wondering now, will it be a huge hassle to get a new SSN with my married name on it? Can I show a marriage certificate as proof to change it at the SSA office and DMV?

Will I be able to have a driver's license with my married name on it - i DO have a marriage certificate from USA that could show the DMV. The problem is that the Social Security Card has my maiden name and so does my green card. It would have probably ben way better and easier to change my name on the passport, but I didn't know that months ago and I wish I had.

Any experiences with this or am I now doomed to keep my maiden name for everything - insurance, driver's license, etc.

Thanks!

it is easy to change your maiden name to you married name on you SSN card and driver's license. you will just have to present your marriage certificate. i just became a citizen last may and i waited to change to my married name on my IDs until i had done so through my naturalization certificate. however, i don't know how hard it will be to change it on your GC and whether there will be hefty fees involved. good luck! :)

I am happy to hear that it is easy to change your maiden name to married name on SSN card. It thought it would be hard because it has to match the name on the green card, and it costs $400 to change the name on the green card.

Does the SSA office ask to see the new green card or just the marriage certificate to change the name?

Thanks!

My wife changed her Drivers License and SSN card within minutes. Just need your Marriage Certificate.

Did she originally get a DL in her maiden name then go back and pay another fee for the name change later? I wonder if you could just get the correct, married, name on DL the first time using marriage certificate as proof for the name. The main problem is that the SSN card has the maiden name on it as it matches my visa.
