I'm just wondering how many women are planning to change their last name when they get married. Is this advisable?

I have changed my last name to my husband's, but it's a personal decision. Changing your name is not an obligation, as many people think.

In reality, if you keep your last name, things will be easier; because you don't have to carry your marriage certificate (as most of us do) to prove that you are married to SMITH. This usually happens when you come back to the US from traveling abroad, and the CBP officer has to match the name on your passport to the name on your GC.

I have been married 1 year and 6 months and I made the decision to change my last name because there was something about being one drew me to the decision . What I also did though was after I received my marriage certificate in hand. I changed all my documents to add my married name. I have completely dropped my maiden name. The process of changing it all took me about 1 month, however, my husband did not start the process of filing yet so I had time. It is indeed a personal decision. I

I won't be changing my last name. I have been married once before, and happily returned to my maiden name after the marriage ended. I also have 3 children who by law carry their fathers surname. When they are old enough I would like to change their names to my maiden name....I don't think my ex husband would feel very happy about me changing their last names to my new partners surname, and I respect that, but I want them to have my last name as my ex husband has very little to do with them.

Anyway, long answer to a short question. :) I'm not sure if it is advisable or not. In my opinion it shouldn't be an issue and I haven't heard of any problems, unless anyone out there on VJ knows of any?

It's not a requirement. Go with what you'd like.

My maiden name contains letters which American's first of all can't pronounce and secondly, they don't have the letters. So it was a natural decision. Without changing the name, my husband is just as much part of me as I am part of him.

IN the eyes of USCIS, it's the norms in the culture they look at and since this is the US, it really boils down to what you prefer. I however kept my middle name(which can't be pronounced either) because I'm more attached to that but they usually never use it overhere anyways.
