My fiancee is coming to the US next week on a K-1 visa. Our wedding date is 8 weeks after she arrives. Once we are married I can put her on my health insurance plan. I'm not sure if I can beforehand since we aren't married yet, probably not. What have other couples here done about health insurance in between the arrival date and the wedding date?

Thanks,

Team Mushmorotsi

I have done some research on this and have found I can buy short term insurance. It seems there is quite a few companies who provide this option. Also let you fiancee check with her travel buro and maybe she can purchase a travelers short term insurance which may be cheaper. Good luck.

I like how you sign off your post :)

Look into short term health insurance, which you can usually get for 30-180 days- what is available will depend on your state. We had one here in Arkansas from BCBS, it covers from the day you send off the paperwork and check, so you can make it valid from arrival day. It usually covers emergencies, routine visits (such as kids vaccinations) and diagnostics, but not pre-exisiting conditions (though with the new law, that may have changed, I do not know).

Be careful about that- if travel insurance realises she is immigrating, they may refuse to pay on a claim.

Hey mushmurok - I know what that means

Yesterday my fiance spoke with his insurance company as we both wanted to make sure that there will be no problems for me to be added to his insurance as we both want to have a baby as soon as I get to the USA ( :innocent: hopefully soon )and the company told him that he can add me to his plan even now - with me not being there and not being a USC. This is very odd to me but they have confirmed it ... so it depends on the company.

We applied for a marriage license same day I arrived in US. Got married the following day. Went to my huband's office the following business to fill out health insurance form. They don't ask for a marriage certificate, just that you're married. So, I was without insurance for 4 days total.

I added my fiancee the week after she got here, no problem. In Calif at least insurers are required to provide insurance for a signifigant other/domestic partner so we did not need to be married as of yet. However, I have a PPO so adding her to my policy is an additional $900 a month!! Almost double what I pay and I reckon it's due to her being of child bearing age. Health insurance is such scam in the US but that's a whole other topic, I will be shopping around for sure!
