Gathering evidence for interview

I've read a couple of threads recently regarding evidence brought to the AOS interview, and it's made me realize that we have very little.

We rent our house from an individual owner. I had the lease before he even came to the US as a student. After we got married, we went to the landlord and asked him to add my husband to my existing lease. He said no problem, but all he did was write a hand-written addendum to the bottom of the lease stating that my husband was now on the lease and that my name had changed due to marriage. We then all initialed. Now, it's starting to worry me a bit because it just seems so...informal.

We have a joint bank account. We went to the branch the other day and asked the manager to write a short letter on letterhead stating that we have a joint account, the account number and routing number, and his signature. He added his phone number and other contact info. Do we need actual statements? I'd really prefer to just use the letter if it's okay.

Other than this, we have photos (not a ton...neither my husband nor I enjoy getting our picture taken...). They do document the progression of our relationship over a two year period, but there just aren't stacks and stacks of them. That's about it.

We're both graduate students. I have health insurance, but it's not the kind where I can add a spouse or dependents. He doesn't have insurance as he's not eligible to work yet.

Our mutual friend is also his co-sponsor, and, additionally, he registered with our state to be licensed to perform our marriage (which was very cool...). He has offered to write an affidavit of support. We also have other family and friends who have offered to write affidavits. Of course we will happy to take them, but do they hold any weight?

Any suggestions are helpful, as I realize we are light on material co-mingling. Honestly, this comes from the fact that we just plain don't own much and can't afford to at this stage while we are both students.

USCIS understands that newlyweds don't have a lot of evidence. You seem to have good reasons for not having some things. Your lease is fine, and the bank letter is fine.

Regarding statements, no, strictly speaking it is not required, but you may be asked to submit bank statements showing activity. I would bring some anyway.

The reason is that financial activity can show something about a case. For instance, there was a multi-millionaire (so he said) who posted. He had one joint account with his immigrant wife, but that account had about $100 in it. His millions were stashed elsewhere. The IO thought (correctly I think) that it was odd that the "joint account" was so paltry, as if it was just for show. It appeared he really didn't trust his wife (not with all his money, but at least more than $100).

Another scenario: A large deposit appears from abroad - the family of the immigrant paying the USC for holding up a sham marriage for immigration purposes.

It seems invasive, but they really aren't interested in your money, just to see how you use the account. They probably won't ask, but I would bring a real statement. Better than a RFE for one at the interview.

I wouldn't bring affidavits now. The IO won't want to read them while you sit there. Those would have been better with the initial application.

A ton of photos is not important. What is more important is photos from different days, places, times. This shows you've spent time together. I see a lot of people say, "but I had 5 photo books!" but they only spent 4 days together (that is for cases where the spouse is abroad, but I hope you get the picture).

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

Just adding to what harpa said -

When we did our interview and I handed joint credit card info the the IO, he actually said "well, you trust him with the money, so that's good!:" :)

And the pictures he was most interested in (and kept) were several of us together from throughout the past few years, and several of my husband with my family. We had about 30 total, he kept maybe 12. (None of the dog. :( )

Also, I gave him an affidavit from a friend, and he only glanced at it and said "I'll read that later." Then, we didn't get approved on the spot, but a few hours later. Part of me wondered if I didn't slow down our approval by leaving him with that long letter to read. :)

I was thinking of getting a Snapfish "album" made of our photos because they can be really cheap. I don't relish the idea of printing them on my printer. (Ink = $$) But, if they keep photos, that kinda sucks. If I can find an online album cheap enough, I'll just make two and they can have one. Again, we don't have that many, so it's not really overboard to have them compiled.

I didn't do anything fancy, but I did print them off on my printer, 4 to a page. It was clear by his choice of pictures that he was building our file. It seemed like he was picking the best ones to show HE made the right choice in approving us. He asked if he could keep them and I'm sure if we'd said no, he would give them back. But I was happy to let him keep them if it meant our file would look better to whoever else was going to see it. :)
