Mitt Romney wants to oust undocumented immigrants, but a recent op-ed in The Huffington Post shows that doing so could have negative consequences as undocumented immigrants paid more taxes than Romney did in 2010.

As taxes are the foundation of social security, Medicare, and unemployment benefits, this suggest that undocumented immigrants support the American social welfare system more than Romney. Undocumented immigrants contribute more than they receive in benefits; whereas, Romney pays less than he will use in services.

Contrary to popular belief, undocumented immigrants must pay taxes through the individual taxpayer identification numbers (ITIN) and employer identification numbers (EIN) in order to work safely in the U.S.

ITIN gives undocumented immigrants an IRS identification number without an SSN to pay taxes. The premise is that no other government agency has access to the information unless they need it for criminal or tax investigation purposes.

EIN provides undocumented workers with an IRS version of an SSN for business bank accounts and tax payments with just a mailing address. In this way, undocumented immigrants pay more to social services than they receive from these services. They pay $6 billion to $7 billion in social security and $72 billion to Medicare and unemployment insurance. But they cannot receive any social security, Medicare, or unemployment benefits unless they become legal.

By paying more taxes on social security, Medicare, and unemployment insurance and not receiving any benefits, undocumented immigrants end up supporting part of America’s social welfare system. Receiving more than they pay to undocumented immigrants, social services end up increasing their net worth through the taxes of undocumented immigrants; whereas, wealthy Americans such as Romney decrease the net worth of social services.

Wealthy Americans such as Romney pay less into these services than they use. Due to loopholes in the tax system, Romney only paid $3 million in taxes on $21.6 million in 2010 – much less than required. Not having to pay the required funds, but still receiving benefits leaves a negative balance. Romney’s $3 million in taxes are unlikely to cover his social security and Medicare costs because he paid below his tax requirements.

Likewise, in 2005, it was estimated that wealthy Americans would have contributed $490 billion to $750 billion had their taxes had no loopholes; possible funds that could have gone to social services were lost. This implication shows how debt loopholes for the wealthy are a detriment to social security, Medicare, and unemployment.

By creating debt for social services instead of increasing the net worth of social security, Medicare, and unemployment, wealthy Americans harm the American social system. Conversely, undocumented immigrants are the ones that support American social services. They increase the net worth of the system by only funding these services and not using the money they put in. In the end, by funding some of our social programs, undocumented immigrants contribute to the well-being of the nation. Instead of trying to get rid of our undocumented immigrants, Americans should allow them to stay in our country.

I love how a lot of people on this forum think they know about illegals. They really think that this $10 an hour manager is in a dark room on a red telephone making secret deals and hiring illegals and paying them cash at the end of the day.

Reality is they get a SS number or ITIN for $20 and it is LEGITIMATE.

My wife worked in two well established and well known restaurants. First one, famous burger sit-down restaurant, every single person in the kitchen was illegal besides my wife. They get paid with a check, and taxes come out. And at the end of the year they do get a tax refund.

Second restaurant was the same thing. A ton of illegals. However, they just so happened to get audited and literally the restaurant had to close down for a week or so to fire all the kitchen staff and replace them.

The manager was illegal and he was making good money. Worked for the company for years. Not sure what happened to him but I know it must have sucked to lose that decent job he had. He packed up his things, and his family moved from Michigan to NYC.

Another guy I know has been here for years. He is planning to move back to Mexico soon. I asked him how he is going to go back and he said he can legally get on a plane and fly back!

It is an epidemic but unless we are talking self-employed illegals (construction, landscapers, or housekeepers) they are getting paid by check at their job with their legitimate paperwork and SS/ITIN numbers and paying taxes.

For those that are "angry" that some illegals don't pay taxes. Remember, most of the skilled laborers that are actual US citizens are not properly filing taxes. I know if I have a plumbing issue I am not about to call a "big name" company and get charged $500. I am going on Craigslist and gonna pay $100, and the guy will probably do a much better job! If said guy (US citizen) makes $60,000 a year cash I highly doubt he is gonna voluntarily declare all that income and get the ####### taxed out of him.

This is the poor mans tax loophole and accounting trick. (They don't report it)

That whole article is full of so many lies and distortions I don't have time to address them all.

Most of the illegals I know pay little of none in the way of Taxes. However they all take advantage of our schools, hospitals, police and fire protection etc etc. To suggest they pay way more into the system than they take out is absurd. Just sending on child to school is worth way more than most of them will ever pay in.

Many work at off the radar jobs, those that don't use false papers. They claim all kind of dependeants so they take out very little taxes, then most never file because it is not their real name. I do know a few that file using a Taxpayer ID number. Then some even get the EIC and get thousands more back than they paid in.

As for Illegals paid more tax than Mitt. Hell there are 12 million of them and one of him .. Geez.. Darn Liberals.

Your almost right but--The paperwork you speak of is not legitimate. It is forged docs under an assumed name. The paperwork is only good until the IRS sends in paper work saying the SSN does not match what the SSN has on file and they have 10 days to correct it. That was the audit you speak of. It happens all the time. Basically they are working under forged papers with stolen SSN's.

And they pay very little tax. They claim huge numbers of dependents so they pay in very little in case the above happens.
