Hey guys,

My lady is coming flying into Heathrow next week, and we're going to head on down to my family's house in France for a couple of weeks while she's visiting.

We're going to come back after those few weeks to England and spend the rest of the stay here.

What's the process re: crossing borders? Is there anything we should be aware of?

Thanks

Ben

I am in Uk with my wife now, i am the usc. When we flew into heathrow we had no problems i was honest, i.e. i am here with my wife visiting her family. No problems just a few quick questions. We then flew to portugal from Liverpool and back a few weeks later, same thing in Liverpool, am here visiting my wifes family, again no problem. be honest answer all questions and you should be fine. if they have a problem let them know you are filing to move to USA not trying to live in UK and you should be fine.

good luck

The US citizen will have to follow whatever visa requirement (or not) into France and back to England.

The UK citizen follows the requirements for UK to France and back. (you obviously know the answer to this one)

Traveling to the UK isn't an issue, she's been before and has proof of ties to the US.

I'm wondering what the requirements are for travelling to France, and whether she can just hop over the border, as I can.

I vaguely remember reading that as long as you're moving between Schengen countries, all you need is proof that you entered one Schengen country initially in order to pass freely between borders, but I don't know if that's true or if I'm misremembering it.

US Citizens do not require a Schengen Visa for stays that are less than 90 days.

I vaguely remember reading that as long as you're moving between Schengen countries, all you need is proof that you entered one Schengen country initially in order to pass freely between borders, but I don't know if that's true or if I'm misremembering it.

When a US Citizen enters the area, they are free to move within the area and are not subjected any additional checks.

Although it was a few years ago, the wife and I decided to visit the Continent by Eurostar. She didn't have to do anything special, except enjoy the chocolates in Belgium. ;)

Are you driving? We crossed on the ferry at Dover and showed passports just like at an airport. After that, within the EU there were crossings but none seemed to be manned. We just drove all over without stopping to Netherlands, Germany, France, Austria, Italy, etc. Czech Republic wasn't EU at the time and we showed passports and got stamps. If driving, check rules like we had to have international driving permit to translate license into foreign language. Also had to put some black tape like an X on the high beams because of being a British car and EU drives on the right. Look up "driving in ______" because each had different rules and we followed the strictest since we were going all over.
