Hi,

I am an Australian travelling to Canada, with a valid working visa, for the winter but am wanting to travel via the US on my way to Canda.

My question being, am I required to have a a flight booked from the US to Canada in order to gain entry or will my Canadian visa be sufficient evidence for me to enter the US without having anything booked for departure?

I would like to travel up the west coast of the US and make my my to Vancouver without having to fly but aren't sure whether I'll gain entry to the US without having a departing flight booked?

If it is not possible to enter the US without a departing ticket, is it possible to gain entry with a departing train or bus ticket? For example a ticket from Seattle to Vancouver?

Any advice would be great, thanks.

You have a visa alolwing entry into Canada...

You will not be allowed entry into the US unless you apply for and are approved for a visa to enter the USA.

And that will take many months of waiting to be aprove

Australia is a Visa Waiver Program (VWP) participant country. If you are allowed to utilize the VWP, you don't need a visa to enter the US to travel over land to Canada and there is no specific requirement to have a departing ticket on a plane, bus, or train to gain entry to the US. However an onward ticket on any mode of transportation out of the US to Canada is definitely useful in showing a CBP officer that you intend to abide by the terms of the VWP. You may want to carry proof of your employment in Canada as well.

Have you completed ESTA?

VWP entrants require proof of onward travel, it is all on the Consulate web site.
