10 weeks ago I applied for a social security number under my married name. My POE was May 16th and I applied June 8th. I called my local social security office today and they said they're still waiting to verify my immigratiuon status with DHS, theres nothing they can do for me and that I need to call back in 2 more weeks. I called USCIS to check my status and explained my situation and they said I should make an infopass appointment. Is this right? Ive filed for my AOS, EAD and AP and have had my biometrics done so I dont see why the social security office cant verify me when I initially came here on a K1.Theyve had my info all along!! Any ideas on what I should do? Im sooooo frustrasted with this. :crying:

You came under a maiden name. Did they try to find you in the SAVE database by that name? Sometimes trying to change names from the one you entered on throws a spanner in the works because that's not how your entry was recorded. I really don't know about the infopass. I don't think USCIS will have your married name to verify until after EAD or AOS are approved. Just guessing on that one. Maybe try to apply in your maiden name???

I tried suggesting the SAVE database to them but they just ignore me. I cant reaply now because my I94 ran out today. I guess I'll just have to wait until I get my EAD. Even then I was told today that when I had my EAD I still needed to be a verified by DHS so Im still going to be in the same boat :(

There is so much variation between offices and how well the workers are trained. Give it 2 weeks after EAD to try SSA again. The database might not get your details immediately. We went to update my husband as a citizen and she said "I hope it's in here already", because it had only been around 10 days since his oath ceremony. They got the verification so it worked. I'd go back to the office in person and ask for a supervisor to help sort you out after EAD.

Go check yourself on E-verify when receiving EAD. If you can find yourself there, odds are SSA can find you in their database. You'll have to wait until receiving EAD to get the SSN unless they megically work something out and happen to send the ssc.

K1 process, October 2010 > POE, July 2011

I-129F approved in 180 days from NOA1 date. (195 days from filing to NOA2 in hand)

Interview took 224 days from I-129F NOA1 date. (241 days from filing petition until visa in hand)

From filing I-129F petition until POE: 285 days

AOS process, December 2011 > July 2012

EAD/AP Approval took 51 days from NOA1 date to email update. (77 days from filing until EAD/AP in hand)

AOS Approval took 206 days from NOA1 date to email update. (231 days from filing until greencard in hand)

Hi there! We are in the same boat...I think you and commented on similar previous post. We are still trying to get my husband's SSN (he came in June), still waiting, no one can give us a straight answer. We had an Infopass appointment and it was a complete and utter waste of time. We knew more about the process than they did. Same story at SSA and CBP. Everytime, we are bounced back to another agency. No agency seems to know what the other is doing or what their process is. I'm so tired of explaining THEIR policies to them and being met with "we don't know". Extremely frustrating. I even called the SAVE verfication office in Washington and argued with the representative for at least 30 minutes as he tried to tell me that my husband would NOT be uploaded into SAVE automatically. Umm ok, incorrect, Mr. SAVE person. I'm so over this :(

Anyway, thought you'd like to know you're not alone!!

Sorry this happened. Do know that you will get your SSN eventually.

I personally recommend that everyone apply for their SSN prior to marriage, in maiden name. Then, at least you have the number. Then I would update the immigration status as well as the name once the GC is approved.

What you did should work, but with the marriage (some clerks think that makes you a K-3) and the different name, it so much verification and training of the SSA employees, it often gets lost.

Just a month more until you have the EAD :)

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

Thanks. This is the reason for my denial:

"We cannot issue you a SSN at this time because your legal immigration status and/or documents will expire before a SSN card can be issued to you"

I dont even know what that means? Im here legally, I have filed for AOS too.

I dont even know what that means? Im here legally, I have filed for AOS too.

It means they were slow in getting the approval, whether they initiated it too late or if is was pending too long, I don't know. So now, it is too late to issue a SSN based on a K-1 visa, because you need to have at least 2 weeks left on your I-94 to be eligible. You will be eligible again once you have your EAD.

AOS for my husband
