I am a U.S. Citizen. Working on a greencard for my hubby.

I'm currently working on dual-citizenship for myself as I am 3 years short of getting Mexican citizenship.

I would love my husband to be a dual citizen too.

The USCIS says, they're not against it per se but they don't encourage it and the oath strictly renounces all other allegiances to other countries.

How can I get him dual citizenship and have a clear conscience if you know what I mean?

Has anyone done it before?

One of my countrymen wore maple leaf socks while taking his US citizenship oath

For me, I can petition now and I plan on it. While Canada does not recogize verbal renunciation of citizenship I am OK to hold dual. I am proudly Canadian, becoming an American won't change that

What exactly are you struggling with?

And getting US citizenship is not a requiement, if it is that big of a deal to him he doesn't need to get it

good luck

Thanks Canadian_wife! It helps me feel better. My concern is...putting my very honest and very proudly Mexican husband through that oath.

But I also want to release my joint sponsor as soon as possible. I think other than that it wouldn't matter if he never became a U.S. citizen.

Any other thoughts?

It's my understanding that if you are an American, you cannot stay American if you become a citizen of another country. However; if you are a Canadian or any other citizenship, you can become an American without renouncing your other country citizenship. The fact is the USA cannot tell another country how to run their affairs. If your country allows you to be a dual then you can do this. The USA does not allow it's citizens to be dual.

This is not correct to my knowledge. The US does allows dual citizenship, as well as for citizens of another country obtaining US citizenship as US-citizens acquiring citizenship of a foreign state. Same thing seems to apply for Canada.

If he becomes a USC he doesn't loose his Mexican citizenship after the oath he we have to reapply for his Mexican passport and he will be all good my mom did that as long as she didn't become a US citizen in the early 90's she was able to regain her Mexican citizenship. If she would of gotten her US citizenship before she wouldn't of but your husband should b fine

Wife that took that oath has not choice but to maintain triple citizenship, but the DOS likes to call it dual or triple naturalization, whatever. Trying to condense that down to two, but she was born in one country and owns property in another, and according to their laws in that country, can't own property unless you are a citizen of that country. We managed to sell one, still have one more to go. With the country she was born at, DOS with an agreement with that country forces her to have a passport with that country so she can visit her family. They do this by putting her place of birth in that country and won't admit her, even with a US passport unless she maintains a passport for that country. And can't do that unless you maintain your citizenship in that country.

With these kind of problems tossed to us, gave me an interest in this subject, even as a natural born US citizen. From what I learned, many people on SS with that tiny check, can't afford to live her, but can receive that SS check in many different countries where they can afford to live. Only handful of countries this is not permitted, like Viet Nam and North Korea to name just two. But to own property in many other countries, may also have to be a citizen of that country.

Its all a question and the bottom line is intention from what I have gathered. If you intend to gain citizenship in a country that plans to wage war against the USA, you would be dead meat and will lose your US citizenship in the process. But if gaining citizenship just to find an affordable place to live, well they really don't say its okay, but adopt the attitude that they will turn their faces the other way.

In my wife's case, openly discussed these issues with my senator and the DOS, senator doesn't even want to touch on these issues, DOS says it has always been that way and that is the way its going to stay. USCIS is an entirely different agency, claim congress is making all the laws, but get an entirely different story from my senator and congressman. So much for representation. But do have a file on this if the USCIS ever makes an issue out of it.

In my own case, even thinking about going to Colombia to retire, from what I get from SS, half of that would be just for property taxes. Down there, can buy a nice home, all fenced in with a garden, ha, you like green peppers, I have green peppers, for only $30,000 and only pay 80 bucks a year for property taxes. What I do know, would have to be a citizen of that country to stay there and own property. What I don't know yet, is if I will have to learn their language, with the latter, would be dead meat. But wife and stepdaughter had to go through all that to come here.

Bottom line, at least so far, we all would like to stay here, but can we afford it?

The thought honestly scares me. I do not know how I will be able to say the oath and mean it 100%

Also the thought of HAVING to file taxes for the rest of my life with the IRS is irksome.

BUT... I want to stay here at least for a while and maybe move back to Australia then back to the US at some point and you can only do that with citizenship or else you have to spend a certain amount of time in the US each year and we may not want to do that.

I am an American citizen and my husband asked me if I wanted to have dual citizenship in his country, so I read up on it. Basically, without going back to find the exact words, if being married to a foreigner makes me a citizen in that country, then the US government is ok with it, because it's an informal thing. But if I sign papers with the intent to become a foreign citizen, my US citizenship is revoked. They used to allow dual citizenship but no longer. They said it's because it makes it too difficult, because you have two different governments involved in one person's life. If anyone wants me to find the article, I'm pretty sure I can find it again.

So if my partner (a USC) wanted to become a dual citizen with Australia (my home country) he couldn't and he would have to give up his US citizenship, but I can become a US and Australian dual citizen and any children we have will be dual citizens too?

I thought it would be best for me to post the link to the actual article posted by the US State Department. It's complicated.

Thanks for the link!

I found this:

http://www.travel.state.gov/law/citizenship/citizenship_778.html

It appears that:

When, as the result of an individual's inquiry or an individual's application for registration or a passport it comes to the attention of a U.S. consular officer that a U.S. citizen has performed an act made potentially expatriating by Sections 349(a)(1), 349(a)(2), 349(a)(3) or 349(a)(4) as described above, the consular officer will simply ask the applicant if there was intent to relinquish U.S. citizenship when performing the act. If the answer is no, the consular officer will certify that it was not the person's intent to relinquish U.S. citizenship and, consequently, find that the person has retained U.S. citizenship.

So that looks like unless you say you want to relinquish your citizenship you will keep your US citizenship and can have the citizenship of another country?

You better ask your country of birth as well as ask the USCIS. The US does not give a damn to naturalized US citizens to restore their citizenship of birth or the country where they are born. But some countries do not allow dual citizenship. That's why when he, a naturalized US Citizen comes back home to his country of birth he is already a foreigner.
