I know the question has probably been asked hundreds of times but I can't seem to find a clear answer or a topic that addresses the steps.

We were planning on getting married rather quickly after I enter the US and I'm confused on when I should go about applying for my social security number. Do we wait the two weeks to marry, apply for the number and then get married? Or, do we get married, apply for my adjustment along with my social security number?

I think I'm just confused about the steps that would be taken if we married and then applied for adjustment, how I would go about getting the social security number? I just need some clarifications on the steps.

If anyone could help out or provide a link with such that would be great! Thank you!

I got married about a month after entering the US. A week or so later, I went to the SSA and applied for my SSN in my married name. I went with my passport (and I-94 that was still valid - it needs to be valid for AT LEAST two weeks after your SSA visit) and my marriage certificate. I had no problems.

Once I received my card, I applied for my adjustment of status. However, you do NOT need a social security number in order to file for your adjustment.

Have you read the Social Security Number guide? http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn

Getting the social security card with a valid I-94 is what you would need so you wouldn't have to wait until you adjust status. On when to get the card, if you're planning to change your name after getting married, then waiting until after marriage makes sense. However, if no name change is being done, then the sequence doesn't matter. However, be sure to check with the county/state where you're being married to ensure they don't require a social security number for both parties to secure a marriage license.

I would greatly appreciate any help that can be given. K1 Visa went great! We married shortly after arrival. However, once we recieved my marriage contract, we were set to go to the Social Security Office. Once there, we were told I could not get a number or card because my new last name does not match with Homeland Security. So we asked if I could get SSN using my old name. They said we cannot because my visa states that i am to marry(K1 Visa). We brought the proper documentation, yet we cant get a number. Suggestions? Advice?

Thank you

I am on the she boat!!!!!

Got married this weekend and can't not get a SSN in orlando with my new name :( ..

They said my SSN will have the same name on my I- 94 and i can change my name on my SSN once i have my green card ... Argh!!!!

If they didn't take your application, I'd suggest going to a different SSA, apply in your maiden name. Wait around for the card in the mail, and then run down to the SSA to change it to married name. It may only work if they didn't keep anything/had your application pending. Voila. :)
