Hello everyone.

I'm an American citizen married to a Japanese citizen for over two years. Right after we got married in America, we both moved to Japan. He and I currently work for the same company, which is global. I used to be with the American division, but I was able to get transferred to the JP division after we got married and moved... I've been with the JP division for over two years now and we are both still employed here. We make well over the poverty guidelines now and have a lot of money saved up.

I am worried about one thing: I don't have a job in America and neither does he. I tried to transfer back to the American side, but the timing wasn't right.

So, when we move, we both will quit the company we work for now and search for new employment in America. Is this something my AoS can be denied for, even if we have a lot of savings and a place to stay indefinitely when we move?

If anyone can give me some peace of mind, I seriously appreciate it. Thank you!!

Yes, you will have to satisfy the Affidavit of Support requirements as part of the visa process.

Check the I-864 FAQ link in my signature below. It ought to help you with questions about showing US domicile, etc.

study the math in the I-864 instructions on assets computation, knowing where to apply the 1/3 rule and/or the 1/5 rule, then refactor your plan, after comparing your assets amounts and running some maths.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

What is your definition of "a lot of savings"? There is no way around the affidavit of support, but if you have enough assets in easily liquidated form (savings account, second home etc) then you can sponsor on assets. It's fairly common amongst couples living abroad together, it's what we did.
