I am in the same situation. I want to adopt my nieces from colombia.

so their mom doesnt have to struggle as much anymore and i also dont know where to start

with that being said,i personally am seeing our immigratation lawyer for advice and steps.

I will update you on what i find out.

good luck

It is extremely difficult to adopt a family member in Colombia because of all of the Hague regulations and US immigration policies. The children have to be declared abandoned, removed from the home and if there is any other family member there who can take care of them, they will be sent to live with them before putting them up for adoption. You can find a summary of what the process might entail here, it's a thread from a Yahoo group dedicated to the adoption process in Colombia.

I made no negative assumptions about your motivations. I gave you the facts. You must meet one of the two requirements to get an immigration visa for your niece. If you cannot meet one of the requirements, then the immigration petition will be denied. Best of luck on your journey, I hope you meet one of the requirements.

I didn't mean you directly...just people or the system in general. I understand why the rules are the way they are but I find comfort in the fact I know people have had success. Again thanks for the great information. Our best shot is with the second requirement. Nicaragua is so poor many families give up children to orphanages because they can't support them. I worked at one for a while. The children could see their families but contact was limited. It is often the only way the children can get proper food, clothes and school. I have a lot of information to look over and start the process.

The Ministry of the Family in Nicaragua will ask you "THE NOTICE OF APPROVAL" showing the US Immigration approved you to adopt a child. You must get the approval by the the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service. In order to obtain this approval you will need to file form I-600A with USCIS to initiate the process and later on you have to file the I-600 with the US Consulate in Nicaragua.

You can obtain more informations reading the Bureau of Consular Affairs Web site

Thank you! This was the information I was looking at but I didn't understand the difference between the two documents. I guess I better just file a I-600a and get the ball rolling.

For the sake of clarity:

Can you adopt the child - it would seem the answer is Yes.

Does that provide the child with any immigration rights to the US - No.
