Shall I start asking if you tip your cashier at Walmart :dance::dance:

I actually have an objection to the whole "tipping" culture, you do a job whatever that is and you get paid for it (accept it is different as a waitress) quite honestly there are very few jobs where someone doesn't do a service for someone else so why don't we tip EVERYBODY nurses, teachers, postman, truck drivers etc. etc. where should it all end.

Well, let's see....

Do you wipe sh!t off of toilet seats or clean pubic hairs from tubs for a living?

Or handle semen-covered (NOT your hubby's!) sheets on a daily basis?

Clean out a multitude of sinks that people have spat in or empty their used tissues from the waste basket?

And so on and so on...?

When it gets right down to it, my job is health endangering and maybe even dangerous....lol.

Sorry but yes I think I'm entitled to ask just to see what the norm is, yup!

I've never tipped a maid. I guess you havent lived until you have tipped a maid lol. What does one do to tip a maid? I mean, I leave the room. If I leave cash on the table and it gets taken is that a tp or a theft? How does one go about this. Leave a note?

There was an air of tongue in cheek ref the Walmart comment but if you really wanna know then some of the clean ups i have done are actually quite impressive vomit, chemicals and blood to start (and none of that was actually in my job description) oh does climb under a toilet door to unlock it for a disabled lady count as pretty damn unsavoury.

My ACTUAL point was there are numerous very arduous and disgusting jobs that it wouldn't cross our minds to leave a tip for lets say any worker in an Emergency Room on a Friday night, sewer workers blah blah blah we all do our jobs why is it that only a certain few get tipped. It was not a personal attack on room maids.

As the title says - do you leave a tip for the housekeeping staff in a motel/hotel/inn that you might have stayed at?

I am one of the housekeeping staff in a 5 star inn which houses a 5 star restaurant as well. And while I definitely know that it's not the same as staying in a by-the-road motel for the night, I was curious if anyone here leaves a tip. My question came to mind due to the "Do you leave your wait staff a tip" thread but also because I am in a constant state of amazement at work that people who think nothing of paying more than a thousand dollars a night in our establishment do not leave tips! The majority do not leave a tip for the maids and let me tell you - if you saw the extra-high standards that are expected of us in order to maintain its 5 star status, then you'd be amazed too. Especially in light of the fact that the messes left behind by 2 adults are sometimes worse than what my oldest daughter's room looked like when she was a teen. The valet/doormen get tipped...the wait staff get VERY well tipped....why not the housekeeping staff? I definitely don't make a high wage and I certainly work my butt off, literally. I've lost almost 20 lbs. since working there. It is hard physical labor, not to mention that in our particular inn, I climb up and down a minimum of 600 stairs every single day while doing my job...

So, yea or nay? B) And why or why not?

My mom cleaned rooms for a while so I always tip. People go cheap on tipping because they are not being watched

I fix all of the ####### HP computers before they leave the factory. If you own an HP/Compaq, and it works, you probably need to thank me for that. Should I get tips as well? I have to stand for 8 hours working on pieces of cheap junk. We only get 30 minutes for lunch, and it takes 15 to get through security, leave the building, and then return; not including driving somewhere to get food. Can't bring your own lunch because it usually gets stolen by one of the illegal workers.

I agree.....where does the tipping end?

Tipping is a "bonus" for doing a good job. It is not required. It should not be expected. People are hired, at a certain wage, to do a job. If you don't like the wage you're getting for that job, get another one. I've already paid the business owner for whatever service it is that I've received; why should I pay even more?

That being said, I do tip, as I've mentioned. But only if the service was exceptional.

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

It hadn't occurred to me to tip the maid, but I'll keep that in mind next time I stay in a hotel. A couple problems I have with tipping though have been brought up here, though. One is the whole idea of a tip being expected, or in the case of waitresses, being a way of subsidizing their wages. A tip should be a sign of appreciation for excellent service and on top of decent wages, not a bribe for doing one's job properly, nor an excuse for an employer to give sh!tty wages. The other thing is the fact that the maid who services my room does not get to keep my tip, but has to share it with the other maids who didn't do anything in my room; sounds rather socialistic to me... when I give a tip, I'm intending it as a reward for the one who actually provided me good service. Same with waitresses. I can understand them sharing the tip with the bussers and kitchen staff, because they each had a part in my dining experience. But it doesn't make sense for my waitress to share her tip with other waitresses who did not service my table.

Hehe actually, yes. When a tip gets left for us there is usually a note saying thank you with it.

You're right, PlatyPius. As I have said in a previous post, I'm not meaning to sound as if a tip is expected but when we receive one, it does makes us feel like we've done a good job. :)

i'm an occupational therapist, and i work in a nursing home. i can *totally* relate. as a matter of fact, when she asked 'does your job involve wiping poop off of toilets?' i thought..."well, i wipe it off old people, does that count?"

actually, in our employee handbook there are very strict prohibitions on receiving tips. it is absolutely forbidden. we actually had a patient who gave her therapist a plant one time as a gift when she finished her therapy. even that was a big no-no.

Ok, a thank you note cool. Now, do you do it every day or once at the end of the stay? I guess every day. If the room is 100.00 / night what is the right tip? 5, 10?
