Brushstrokes Bring Out Christ's Image

A 2-foot profile of Christ appeared in the brushstrokes on the wall of their Valdese home, they say.

Also, a cross shown beneath the face and to the right a hand holding a staff stands out.

Bob and Bobby, as they are better known, feel like the images are God's seal on their home.

"They're God's sign to us that this is a house of prayer," Bobby says.

The Hannahs, who are both in their early 60s, hope to make the wall a tourist attraction.

Bobby says she imagines people shuttling up to her home on Mineral Springs Mountain and paying to see the wall.

They will come to renew their thoughts and faiths and experience a spiritual revival of the heart, she says.

Their temple-to-be is already the site of prayer meetings.

Bobby says about 20 people, some fellow members of Whitnel Pentecostal Holiness Church, come together monthly to eat, take communion and pray in unison.

An important part of these meetings, Bob says, is anointment with Myrrh.

Bob dabs people's necks and arms before praying with the oil.

He anoints people at work as well.

Owner of Hannah's Heating and Air Conditioning, Bob anoints and prays for almost all of his customers after tending to their air ventilation needs.

He practices what he preaches.

For seven years he's lived with a benign tumor on the left side of his neck.

Doctors want to treat the growth with chemotherapy and remove it.

But Bob says, "When we pray, it's a done deal and I've prayed for God to take it away."

He's not seeking treatment or taking medicine for the tumor.

But power of prayer aside, can the Hannah's claims about their wall be true?

Is God speaking through paint?

Sociology professor at Appalachian State University Cinthia Pratt is skeptical.

"A person's perspective can become their reality," Pratt says.

Pratt points to news reports of people who see the Virgin Mary in potato chips and grilled cheese sandwiches.

A person's religious ideology informs these kinds of sightings, she says.

Senior Minister at First Baptist Church Dr. Thomas Bland says he's not quick to dismiss the Hannahs' claims.

"Many would benefit from at least considering the possibility of the Lord making Himself known to us in everyday life," he says.

Regardless of what people think, Bob and Bobby prepare for the day when people of all beliefs will travel to see their wall.

The couple says that they pray about it every day.

This is the front page today on the news paper where I work. I must ask the "journalist" if he bothered to ask them what their plans are for all that money they plan to make to charge admission for people to come gawk at their bedroom wall

Oh geez...

If it looks like a face, it MUST be something spiritual. If it has long hair, it must be Mary, if it's looks slightly manly, it must be Jesus. I don't buy this stuff at all, and I am a Christian. If they want to think it looks like Jesus, that's fine, but to publicize it for money is wrong.

Oh c'mon....that looks more like Jerry Garcia. But, then again, if Jerry and Jesus are one and the same, oh so many "mysteries" of the universe could be explained....

I have to agree Christina, even if I was a Christian, I think its wrong to charge people money (or ask for "donations") for something like this, or even "send money and we'll pray for you and guarantee your spot in heaven!" Or to auction off your grilled cheese sammich that looks like the Virgin Mary.

Isn't that how Jim & Tammy Fae ended up in prison?

Very funny, but I'm sorry if this a silly question, but does anyone know what Jesus looked like to make this assertation?

Anyway, we all know that the human brain tries to make shapes look like familiar objects, faces etc, so any random series of dots, blobs etc will be translated into something 'recognizable'

If you are daft enough to pay good money to see these things, that's your look out I guess.

No one knows what he looks like, besides that he was Hebrew/Jewish so he'd have those kind of ethnic characteristics. So no one can truly say it looks like him anymore than it'd look like any man.

Not light brown hair, blue eyes, and milky white skin like so many pictures portray him as.
