What a step backwards for this counrty I so love and grew up in. We asked Berlin to take down thier wall, now we will build a fence to keep our neighbors to the south our?, or are we fencing in our people? Border counties will pay for this, in loss of revenue. Now this border will resemble a maximium secrutiy prison. This still will not curb the appetite for the those wanting to come, only making people more resourceful, this isn't immigration reform. It is starting to remind me of that movie with Kurt Russell (I think). Escape from New York. Oh this is going to be so bad, both economically and politically. Land of the free, Fences do make me feel free, do they you? I am contractor and have several of our friends to the south working with us.(all legal). We are a very diverse group, America at it's best I thought. I am rambling now. Later.

The fence, if it is built, will be mostly a symbolic gesture. "See? We are doing something concrete(har, har) about illegal immigration!" Yet, what of the smuggler's tunnels? What of the parts of the border with no wall? As usual, politicians come up with a half-baked, ineffective 'solution' to a problem just to keep people quiet.

Seriously. I expect them to build a wall across the desert, but a bridge over the Rio.. appease both sides of the issue without angering Mexico to much I guess.

I'm pretty sure unions are not too pleased with the amount of illegal immigration there is in this country either, when it comes to jobs going to cheap labor and the downward pressure placed on wages as a result. Unions tend to stick to the more 'liberal' side of things.

You can't be serious with this comparison. We didn't ask Berlin to take down their wall because the West Germans were trying to get into to East Germany to start a better life.

Agreed, not a good comparison, unless you are rewriting history...

It was built during the post-World War II period of divided Germany, in an effort to stop the drain of labour and economic output associated with the daily migration of huge numbers of professionals and skilled workers from East to West Berlin, and the attendant defections, which had political and economic consequences for the Communist bloc.

Why shouldn't America protect it's borders??

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I would rather have a border up rather than countless MS13 members or other terrorists roaming the streets.

Would you feel responsible if the wall was not built and we later found the terrorists smuggled weapons through Mexico, which killed thousands of Americans??

Their arguments:

* It's not fair (Yes it is)

* It's racist (No it isn't)

* People just want to work (So do the rest of us)

* They're not taking jobs away from Americans (Yes they are)

* They're not hurting anyone (The hell they're not)

Etc., etc., etc.

A country that fails to protect it's borders will after a while no longer exist. My only question is why it isn't going to be longer, since it's far short of the whole border.

Plus as other have pointed out the Berlin wall was to keep people in not keep people out. Better analogy is the Great Wall of China.

I'm thinking more of "see, it didn't work", which would be faulty and flawed since it will only cover a very small portion of the border.
