Passport book after passport card

I read the website, but still can't quite figure it out. I got my passport card a few months ago. I did not apply for passport book at the time. Now I'd like to apply for a book. Is it considered a renewal that can be done by mail? Travel.gov only explains that you can get your first passport card by mail, if you already have a passport book. I could not find any information about getting your first passport book when you already have a card.

if you dont mind me asking..what is the difrence between the book and card?

11/12/11.....N400 send to Nebraska service center

11/14/11.....N400 delivered to NE

11/21/11.....Check cashed

11/23/11......NOA recived in the mail(priority date nov 14)(notice date nov 21)..(you will be notified of the date and place of your interview when you have been scheduled by the local USCIS office.you should expect to be notified withing 90 days of this notice)

12/13/11......got text and email about biometric letter being send out

12/17/11.......got biometric letter in the mail(appointment date dec 28th)

12/19/11.....did early walk in FP

12/22/11.......got email and text about being placed in line for interview scheduling

01/30/12.......got email from my IO were i was asked to pick my own interview date and send email back with the date i picked

02/06/12......got INETRVIEW email with appointment letter(have to print that out and bring with me on the interview day)

02/28/12.......INTERVIEW with oath on the same day(as long i pass the test afcorse.)

I AM US CITIZEN

Card can be used between Mexico and Canada, "The U.S. Passport Card can be used to enter the United States from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda at land border crossings or sea ports-of-entry "... it is not good for air travel. http://travel.state.gov/passport/ppt_card/ppt_card_3926.html

Looks like you should be able to do it via mail but I would contact the National Passport Information Center (NPIC) at 1-877-4-USA-PPT (1-877-487-2778) and verify.

Once you do, can you let us know?

Probably a good thing for some people who've Naturalized to carry with them these days what with laws like they put in place with AZ. Although the only place I've been asked about my status has been the DMV and my employer. But that's probably because I'm British.

I know there's no law. But if you were hispanic and in AZ I'm sure you'd still be given a hard time. Even my co-worker was when she was pulled over in CA. Cop soon changed his attitude when she showed him her Military ID. But yes, there's no law requiring USCs to carry ID to prove such.
