It's very weird when I go to Perú with the hubs and we share the same last name. That only happens with siblings over there. People just don't get it. In Ecuador, your wife would be Sra. Father's Last Name Mother's Last Name de T-Bone. Not to mention her middle name(s).

Some of them do, some of them drop the 2nd one, a lot of them never use the "de Husband's Last Name" It's super confusing, there's no rhyme or reason to it. Official documents have the paternal & maternal last names on them. Wedding invitations come addressed to (example) Sr. Rodriguez y Sra. de Rodriguez. Some people like to be called by their middle name instead of their first name. I like the USA one last name system better.

The "de T-Bone" part is the chief variable here, si man. I'll never out-figure their name system, no man. It's easiest to yell "Amigo!" or "Amiga!", si man or ma'am. Fortunately, Mrs. T-B. took my gringo name, whee man, so she has first-middle-last. Unfortunately, she goes by the middle name, so old habits die hard, uff man.

Russian culture goes by the formal first name and the patrynomic, middle name which is the fathers name with a suffix. Alla Eduardovna. No matter her status in marriage her name will always be Alla Eduardovna. I call her "Alichka" which is one of the "short names" for Alla (I know, it is not shorter) It is also a "diminutive" name, a "sweetheart" name for lack of better term. Also "Alka" is a short name but I never cared for that one, some of her girfriends call her that.

Alla hates "ma'am"

If I call out to her ad say "Alla Eduardovna!" she comes with the "what did I do wrong look?" Like when your mother called you using your middle name.

This may be veering off topic (big shock) but I still remember the very first time someone called me "sir." I wasn't that old so I was taken aback somewhat. Yet it felt good too. I'm aiming this only at Americans...I think we need more "Yes sir" and "Yes ma'am" in our culture. Civility and courtesy are diminishing more and more. Some of this has to do with the whole feminist, unisex, informal society we have inherited from the 60s through the 80s.

When I watch movies from the 30s to the 50s, I see men wearing suits, ties and hats...not reversed baseball caps either. They had real style and masculinity as well. Those great Fedoras etc. And the nice topcoats and trench coats. Now many look like slobs...men and women. I blame Levi Jeans and Nike sneakers for this downward spiral (well kind of joking here) but society's dress code has really gone south. That's why we American men rave about how the RUB ladies look. Sexy, definitely. But importantly, classy too. The best of both worlds.

I agree. I am in the position of hiring people and you would not believe the way some come to interviews and act at them. I mean, I laugh but it is not funny. And these guys are interviewing for construction trades for the most part. If they were my sons I would hold their heads under water.

I am hardly a formal guy bt I do dress decently and act respectfully to people in public. If you are interviewing for a job in construction wear clean clothes, work shoes, pull your pants up and wear a decent looking hat. Showing up at a job site with your own helmet is a good effort. Act like you know what is required for goodness sakes.

Russian women's mean streak should not be under-estimated. I had a serious Russian girlfriend some years ago. She had a dog. The relationship between her and the dog was crazy. I would watch her pet and reward the dog one minute, then later slap the poor dog hard across its nose 5 or 6 times for the same behavior. When I told her I couldn't have a dog in my condo, she cried. She loved the dog but slapped it silly sometimes. Her treatment of the dog turned me off but I tried to accept it as a Russian culture thing. That dog must have gone schizoid at some point trying to figure how to avoid punishment.

I never regretted walking away from that relationship.
