Fasting Question

Quick question. Has anyone heard of half day Ramadan fasting for people who are ill or are unable to fast a whole day? An older muslimah that I met yesterday told me that I could fast the morning of one day, and the afternoon of the next and my effort would be aknowledged by Allah. Anyone know anything about this?

I have no idea, but am interested. I started coming down with a cold yesterday and today am full blow sick. I broke my fast to take some orange juice. Moh told me when one is sick you are to care for yourself until you are reasonably well to resume your fast and make up the days at the end. (This happens to me every year... grrrrr) After my fever passes I'll resume my fast. However, I think for a fit individual (unless a woman is pregnant) fasting is to be from sun up until sun down.

If you're ill then you don't have to fast but you must make it up at a later time. The only provision for half day fasting I've heard of is in the case of children and preparing them to fast. That's what my boys are doing now.

 There are two things that you can do if you cannot fast - either make the full day up later or if you are unable to fast at all and can't make it up later, then you pay a recompense, feeding poor people.

If fasting is particularly difficult for you and you keep getting sick, consider making up the days in December, when they're very short. And, attempt to fast throughout the year, so that your body gets used to it. That way, fasting for several days in a row won't come as such a shock to your system.

Kara is right, half day fasts are for children, in order for them to start to learn to train themselves to fast.

If you are sick or have a valid excuse, then simply do not fast for that time, but be sure to make them up after Ramadan ends.

I have an appointment with a muslim doctor next week to see what she says about me fasting with my migraines. I can't go the whole day fasting without food and water because it makes my migraines worse and the pain gets unbareable. I still have a slight headache from the migraine on Monday night and I didn't fast yesterday or today. That's why I'm asking. I can do the half days, but I am looking for a way to do the fulldays without all the pain. Thanks for all the help.

From what I understand, fasting two half days would mean two days of broken fasts, rather than one day of fasting.

I get migraines. In the past, I have taken my medicine either before beginning the fast or after. I would make sure to drink lots of water. Headaches in general are to be expected when you are fasting for the first time, or even the first few days for people who do it often, so you may be experiencing some of this on top of your migraine symptoms.

Have you tried other techniques for dealing with migraine pain? Reducing the noise around you, dark room, avoiding trigger foods?

I tried a ton of techniques! But I can't avoid women and their perfumes working in a bank. At my old bank we had glass up so it wasn't a problem, here there is no glass. I asked if I could take the medicine in the morning but my doctor said that it's most likely that it wouldn't last all day. They usually come on around 2 or 3pm at that's when I need to take it. I guess I am just going to have to make up the days I miss after they figure out what the heck is wrong my my head!
