Went to SSA and applied for my social security card today, I was wondering how long will I receive it?

Also, can I apply for a drivers license with my ss card even though it says for work only?

Your social should take 2-4 weeks.

Whether or not you can use that to get a driver's license when your I-94 is expired depends on your state.

If you haven't successfully AOS'd you won't get the SSN. You're not eligible.

It means that in order to receive a SSN, you have to prove lawful presence in the U.S. that goes beyond that of a tourist.

If you are out of status, you cannot prove that until you have your petition for Adjustment of Status approved or at least until you have an EAD card at hand. Think about it: without proof of lawful presence, anybody, including illegal aliens, could get a SSN and start using it.

Most states will not issue a drivers license till you have legal status - which would be the EAD - then the license is only good for the length of the EAD (in your case).

Once you have the EAD (due to your AOS process) - it will not matter if your SSN says "For work only" - since driving <> work.

Didn't you get your EAD already? I'm sure I read that somewhere. Please fill in your timeline so others can respond to you correctly.

Okay, it takes about a week to 9 or 10 days until you'll have your SS card in the mail. You could go to the SSA again and ask for the number today though. The number is what you need first and foremost.

Since driver's license law is state law, all the states handle this differently. In many states you can get a driver's license with an EAD card, in others you'll have to wait until you have either the I-551 stamp or Green Card in your possession.
