Dawkins attacks 'alien rubbish' taught in Muslim faith schools

Richard Dawkins has attacked Muslim faith schools, saying that they teach students 'alien rubbish'. The noted atheist claimed that pupils were being taught to ignore scientific evidence in favour of following the Koran.

He said that he had even met a science teacher who believed that the earth was only 6,000 years old.

Mr Dawkins, a former Oxford professor who found fame as an evolutionary biologist before becoming a vocal opponent of religion, is a longstanding critic of all faith schools.

But he has said that Islamic schools are worse than others, as their teaching is more likely to be influenced by a religious agenda.

Talking to the Times Educational Supplement, he described a trip he made to an 'utterly deplorable' Muslim school in Leicester.

According to the Daily Telegraph, he said: 'Every person I met believes if there is any disagreement between the Koran and science, then the Koran wins.

'It's just utterly deplorable. These are now British children who are having their minds stuffed with alien rubbish.'

Mr Dawkins added that the influence of faith schools often continues when their ex-pupils continue to university.

'Occasionally, my colleagues lecturing in universities lament having undergraduate students walk out of their classes when they talk about evolution,' he said. 'This is almost entirely Muslims.'

The bestselling author of The God Delusion said he had considered setting up an atheist school. However, he also believes that it is important for children to learn about religious stories and traditions in order to understand cultural backgrounds and literary traditions.

His new book, The Magic of Reality, is intended to make children enthusiastic about the wonders of science.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

This smells like a 'UK' problem.

Not so useful for any DIY Immigrate to USA portal, alas.

If yer in the UK, though, you should invite him out for tea, have a conversation, express yer views.

He's a fan of high tea. Seriously.

YOu got'ta hand it to Dawkins, he takes his faith as serious as any Baptist Missionary, though he does get a much greater financial reward for his labors.

You should check out his book. I think it's great for people like me (you too??) who have a very elementary understanding of science (really aimed for a younger less intelligent audience). good.gif

"The Magic of Reality: How We Know What's Really True by Richard Dawkins

"The Magic of Reality" is the latest contribution by evolutionary-biologist icon Richard Dawkins. Professor Dawkins is on a mission of education and in this enlightening book he reaches a younger audience by introducing science like only he can. In one of the most beautifully illustrated science books, he takes the reader on a ride on a wide-range of topics of interest that masterfully navigates between myth and what is real. This mesmerizing 272-page book is composed of the following twelve chapters: 1. What is reality? What is magic? , 2. Who was the first person? , 3. Why are there so many different kinds of animals? , 4. What are things made of? , 5. Why do we have night and day, winter and summer? , 6. What is the sun? , 7. What is a rainbow? , 8. When and how did everything begin? , 9. Are we alone? , 10. What is an earthquake? , 11. Why do bad things happen? ,and 12. What is a miracle?

Positives:

1. A wonderful book on science that is accessible to a younger audience without compromising the science lovers in all of us. Bravo!

2. It's a book written by the great Richard Dawkins, so you know the quality goes in before the product goes out.

4. One of the most beautifully illustrated books you will ever find. Great quality binding only matched by its substance.

5. Science knowledge conveyed in a brilliant, lucid manner.

6. Great format. In each chapter, Professor Dawkins illustrates clearly the difference between the wishful and what is "really" real.

7. What a wonderful way to learn about science. Great practical examples throughout this beautiful book. A ride of knowledge, hop on! Readers of all ages will enjoy this great book.

8. Even-handed and pleasant tone throughout.

9. A wide range of fascinating science topics in the hands of the master.

10. Great wisdom throughout, "We should always be open-minded, but the only good reason to believe that something exists is if there is real evidence that it does".

11. The book cleverly goes from myth to reality.

12. The concept of magic in three tiers: supernatural, stage and poetic.

49. Absolutely kindles the fire of learning.

50. An excellent gift for all occasions.

Negatives:

1. The book is intended for a younger audience and covers briefly a lot of topics. If you are expecting an in-depth analysis, this is not the book for you.

2. No bibliography.

In summary, a fabulous book for all to enjoy. I usually limit my purchases to Kindle books because of the convenience but I'm glad I was "forced" to buy this book in hardcover binding. It's a beautiful book inside and out. Substance finally matches style and it's a science book for all to enjoy and for years to come. There is a sense of awe, a poetic magic for reality. For all his knowledge, Professor Dawkins is humbled by what little we do know and how much more we need to find out about the world. It's precisely this drive to know more and that hunger for knowledge that I always wanted to convey to my children. Finally, I have a book that expresses my sentiments and I have Richard Dawkins to thank!"

Here is another one for you to review and share your opinion.

It was written by a fellow Atheist.

Book Description

ISBN-10: 1551118637 | ISBN-13: 978-1551118635 | Publication Date: July 20, 2009 | Edition: 1

The doctrine of intelligent design is often the subject of acrimonious debate. Seeking God in Science cuts through the rhetoric that distorts the debates between religious and secular camps. Bradley Monton, a philosopher of science and an atheist, carefully considers the arguments for intelligent design and argues that intelligent design deserves serious consideration as a scientific theory. Monton also gives a lucid account of the debate surrounding the inclusion of intelligent design in public schools and presents reason why students' science education could benefit from a careful consideration of the arguments for and against it.

Or take your pick.

Will do.

You may also want to read Bill Bryson's "A Short History of Nearly Everything", which is a very well written, funny, introduction to many areas of modern science for the intelligent layman. I highly recommend it.
