Are the use of message boards leading to the decline of the written word, or is it reflecting normal patterns of communication which already existed? I have taken two online college level class (well, one a few months ago, and one currently.) Message boards are common to both. In the first one, the instructor never posted, and the postings were informal, and contained words like "prolly." (for example) The one I am currently taking, the instructor said up front proper grammer was to be used, and posts regularly, pointing out things such as non capitalized "i"'s.

As a result, I find the current message board more informative. It could be the nature of the students, or the assignements, but I could not really gleen any useful information from the informal one to make any constructive responses.

I am guilty of that type of behaviour as well... I have learned to deal with it!!! ;)

I still go back and forth on using capitols or not, but I just really don't want to get into any bad habits, since I have to type so many e-mails at work! :)
