P.S.

Make sure you apply for her SSN prior to getting married if you want her to have a SSN now. If you try to apply after getting married,

I've read on VJ about a couple who were told to wait until the green card is received. BTW, an SSN is not needed to file for AOS.

My fiance...now my wife applied for her SSN a week after POE and received her SSN card a week later. Once we were married,

we went back to our local SSA office and applied for a name change. She now has her SSN with her married name.

You don't need to apply for a SSN before marriage. What you need to do; however, is apply for a SSN at least 2 weeks before her I-94 expires.

Good call. Definitely get her a SSN prior to the wedding. Makes things a lot easier later (jobs, taxes, id's etc).

How do you get an SSN if you are on a fiancee visa?

http://www.ssa.gov/s...o-a-n-documents Seems to specifically state that you can't?

Where? Adult--> Original-->Noncitizen

Sorry timed out before I could edit.

For step one you need immigration status which is the K-1 visa and the I-94 with more than 2 weeks before it exipres; work eligibility is inherent in the K-1 visa in the eyes of the SSA and allows the K-1 visa holder to apply for a SSN; age and ID are the passport and birth certificate if two documents are reuired.

The application for a SSC has been hit or miss by VJ members. Some have trouble applying before marriage, some after marriage, some have trouble changing the name once married. The only way to be certain of not having to go th ethe SSA more than once is to wait for the GC and then apply. Of course you are without a SSN for all that time and a SSN does open several doors that other wise would be closed.

Good luck,

Dave
