She is not licensed yet. Does she need be licensed in the Philippines in order to take the NCLEX here? I was looking at jobs here and they say they need someone to have a degree from an accredited school. How do we knoe if the school is accredited ( its Holy Infant College in Tacloban City )

Yes, she can work as a Nurse here in the US. First, check the requirements of your State. Some States require the local license from the Philippines, some don't.

If they require local license, she needs to pass the Philippine board exam then she can take the NCLEX. If not, she can take the NCLEX of whichever state you both reside.

To find out if her college was accredited, she can have her credentials evaluated by CGFNS.

Just google and you will find more info. :)

Yes, she can work as a RN if she'll pass the NCLEX exam. As what the others were saying, try to look up on the Board of Nursing on your state so you can check what are the requirements for her to take the NCLEX exam. Some states would be needing a SSN as well among others. The requirements really varies depending on what state you're in.

If your wife graduated from a nursing program in the Philippines, it's not likely that she would have to go back to school in order to become a nurse in the U.S. She simply has to pass the NCLEX.

In order to be allowed to take the NCLEX, she will have to apply to one of the 50 states (and be accepted). No matter where she lives in the U.S. (or in the Philippines), she has the option of applying to any state to sit for the NCLEX. If she is accepted to sit for the NCLEX through a different state than the one you live in, she can take the test in the town where you live (or in 'Pinas).

Once she passes the NCLEX, she will be licensed in the state which granted her permission to take the NCLEX. Then she can apply for a nursing license in her home state, a process known as license by endorsement.

Here is where the work comes in: since each state has their own requirements for foreign nurses who want to take the NCLEX, she needs to find a state which doesn't require her to have passed the NLE. I believe there are some states that don't require the NLE, but I don't know which ones they are. To find out, you can check a state's board of nursing website, or maybe you can post the question in the Philippines forum on allnurses.com.

The other thing you need to check out is the license by endorsement process of the state you live in. You will want to find out whether or not your home state's process will require the NLE. It's my understanding that the license by endorsement process is quite often different than the licensing process in a state. In other words, there are states which require the NLE in order to be allowed to sit for the NCLEX, but they have no such requirement for licensing by endorsement.

Chinook's case is not the same as your wife's case. Chinook passed the NLE in 'Pinas and worked as an RN there. Then she applied to sit for the NCLEX through Vermont before we met each other. Chinook was authorized to sit for the NCLEX through the state of Vermont. She took the NCLEX here in Seattle, just a few kilometers from where we live. She passed the NCLEX (:secret:...first try...75 questions...90 minutes), and then endorsed her license to Washington state. She's now working as a RN here in Seattle.

But my advice is the same...if your state requires the NLE, find a state that will accept her even though she does not have her NLE...apply to sit for the NCLEX through that state...and then endorse the license to your state.

By the way, the NCLEX costs about $350-400 in 'Pinas...plus travel expenses to Manila. The NCLEX costs $200 in the U.S. and you don't have to travel to take it.

I agree, some states may require TOEFL or IELTS for foreign nurses as a requirement to sit for the NCLEX. It's my understanding that it's not always a requirement when licensing by endorsement.

Please note...there are no state board exams in the U.S....the NCLEX is a national exam...you simply apply through a state for permission to take a national exam.

Depends on the state. Check with your state nursing board.

Checkout allnurses.com International forum! I'm sure if u just went there and did a search you will find ur answer. We all know there are tons if Filipino nurses, lol I think my floor back in VA was almost half filipino's! My home province of Saskatchewan goes down every yr and hires many Filipino nurses!! Best of luck

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
