They typically go by your current income. If you are still short the limit, you can use assets equal to 3 times the amount needed. So, if you are short $1000, you can show you have $3000 and qualify.

DIfferent embassies may be more stringent, though, so you will get the best help if you fill out your profile, so people can advise you of any embassy-specific information.

'Harpa Timsah' Thank you so much for replying. His current income is not short of the poverty guideline. However he had a lower income in the past. does this mean they would only care about the current income or does it still mean we would need to show proof of income or assets for the past 3 years?

Hi All! :innocent: If your not able to show three years of income exact to poverty guidelines, What else can you show? and is there an exact method of calculating?

(I mean how can we tell the assets ect is sufficient )

THANK YOU !!

hi i think we have the same problem. my finacee (filipino-american) stayed here in the philippines for 3 years and so he doesnt have an income tax for the last 3 years. he went back to US november 2010 and started working for part time since january 2011. our lawyer made a certification/attestation saying that he didnt stayed in US for 3 years (2008,2009,2010) and so he is not able to file any income tax. my finacee signed it and that paper was attached to his current income tax. since he's work is part time only, his mom also did the affidavit of support for me.

Current income is the most important thing to show. Provide the past tax transcripts (no need to provide past assets), plus a letter from his employer stating his position and salary, and a few of his most recent pay stubs.
