Divorcing to apply for K-1 instead

umm, from what I understand, regardless if this is the OP's situation or the OP's friend's, someone gave them this advice...

we got our share of bad advice when we were going through this process too ...

Amen to that Marilyn. I was told that we absolutely positively needed an immigration lawyer, and was referred to one. They wanted to charge us 5,000 and at first said that that is all it would cost. They insisted that the paperwork alone would cost more than that if we did it on our own and that they would get our case approved quicker. What a load of BOLLOX!!! When I called the lawyer again, I spoke to someone else and they told me that no it wouldn't cost us 5,000 dollars but rather 10,000 dollars!!!!! FOR THE LOVE OF SWEET JESUS!!! One bit of sage advice someone from here once told me.....RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH...don't listen to just one person, but read the immigration standards and what have you. I don't think that the USCIS would ever recommend someone to get a divorce then start all over again going for the K-1. Not only are you wasting your own time....the USCIS time, but you are also wasting OUR TIME...and others that are waiting in line to be approved and what have you............BTW...where is the OP now????

5000 then 10,000, sometimes the bad lawyers are worse than used car salesmen. That kind of robbery is what gives the lawyers such a bad reputation, along with the TV ads that they do, chasing ambulances.

LOL YOU GOT THAT RIGHT!!!! kin lawyers...thieving bastards i tell ya.... Like I said, you really have to research...even if your case does need a lawyer....you need to thoroughly research your lawyer prior to hiring him...doesn't make it easy eh???

my hubby picked our lawyer based on the building he was located in... ... he said some of the other lawyers were in buildings that were kind of rundown but this one looked professional

The lawyer quoted my hubby a price and it wasn't too bad and we were under the impression that the price qouted was for the whole process.... turns out it wasn't ... it was just for the first part of the process .. and hubby got another bill a few months down the road

that dang lawyer cost us a lot of money and time.... he messed up a lot and I had to keep him on his toes.... I wish I had found this site sooner because we probably could have managed this on our own ...

Heck, if your contemplating something like divorcing to get a k-1.. then why not travel to mexico and just walk over with the rest of the crowd?

This has got to be a joke...go ahead tell me ur kidding!!!

You realize by divorcing you add more paperwork? (divorce decree) you think they not going to question why you divorced so close to filing a K1 .....you may get caught up in RFE's so the K1 process may take waaay longer

That would be a very very very bad decision. It would probably even end up taking longer to get the divorce and redo everythng for the I-129F in the end. Please tell your friend to wise up!

I didn't read it all I stopped after reapplying for the K1 would be much faster .

That someone that gave them such horrible adivce must of NEVER been through the visa process or else they would know that they are spewling nuthing but !@#!@#!@#. Dont you dare listen to them! I really hope this is some sort of silly joke.
