thanks i appreciate all the advice i will move on and have the passport changed

DS-230 requires a copy of your wife's passport, where the name is going to be different. You can still submit your DS-230 and write an explanation letter that your wife is getting the name on the passport changed - NVC accepts such requests. They will approve it and aks your wife to produce the evidence of change at the US consulate at Interview time. This way you wont loose time. Even if NVC send a RFE, which I don't think it will, you will still save time.

Please note that your name I-130 and the name on the passport must match by the time DS-230 is filed (need to attached a copy of bio data page of passport) or at least by the Interview time else you will not get your visa.

I submitted a copy of my bio page in my passport along with a copy of the new application I had sent in requesting my name change happen. All was accepted as far as I can tell - and I just got my renewed passport in my married name. :)

Good luck!

DS-230 requires a copy of your wife's passport, where the name is going to be different. True you can also submit copy of her birth certificate which shows orignal maiden name and submit marriage certificate which shows new name.

How will the name on the I-130 match with my changed name on the passport? I did not understand :)

If you were planning to change the name, you should have filed I-130 with that new name. That is what everyone does (however you have one more option). The Visa will be issued in the name provided in the DS-230 (you can change it in DS-230 if not done at I-130 time) - DS-230 is the actual visa application - of course you will have to explain why you are changing the name in DS-230 and send it with the DS-230 packet. Then the name in the visa will be what you gave in the DS-230 and it needs to match the name in your passport.
