Will having a "religious ceremony" in my fiancée's country (Germany) prohibit a K1 approval?

There have been many instances a K-1 was denied to couples who performed a "religious ceremony." Even when no legal documents were recorded for the ceremony, the USCIS can also consider you "not married," but "married enough" to deny you a K-1 visa.

No, not regardless. Getting married in a religious ceremony is the common way folks in Germany get married. As someone replied later in this thread, regardless of the "officialness" of it al, the Embassy very might considered you two to be married enough to be married. Email the Embassy and ask about your plan.

we recognize that we are not going to be "officially" married at this point with the authorities that be--nor do we want to be so. We want to be married legally in America, where we can then enjoy our lives together.

Then just through a party with nothing religious about it, immigrate to the US, get married and then when you have the AP or GC, return and do the official ceremony in Germany.

It's all crazy at this point.

Only because you are trying to do too much. Immigration to the US and the visa requirements also requires the couple to do things a little out of the ordinary. Good family and friends will understand this.
