One country, 50 different states with 50 different laws and statues, can get confusing. Immigration is suppose to be a federal law, but Wisconsin, not as bad as Arizona, passed some strict immigration laws. Like fining an employer $16,300.00 with over three employees for hiring an illegal. Sure had that problem with my wife's legal department with an expired conditional green card, what in the hell is a one year extension. And the same with our DMV.. First thing my wife wanted to do with her US citizenship certificate was to go to her employers legal department.

Wisconsin is equally crazy on voters registration, now required to have a state ID or a drivers' license, but still don't have to prove you are a citizen to register. Just want you to check that I am a US citizen box, didn't even want to see your certificate or even a birth certificate. Perhaps why I have this strange idea our leaders are idiots.

If our state finds and illegal, can't deport them, only lock them up in the county jail, they is where they stay until federal agents have the time to come over and escort them out of the country. Have this as first hand knowledge, my stepdaughters' co-worker was here illegally that I knew, was caught, arrested, spent two months in the city jail, and two agents came to escort him back to Mexico. With only the shirt on his back, had a nice vehicle and apartment full of goodies, have no idea who kept that, and any cash he had in his pocket.

With that knowledge, typed out all the form due dates and had that pasted to my refrigerator door and read all the applications first to keep tabs of that history stuff. Wanted to keep my wife, one in a million for me.

But in regards to individual state rules, have the SS, that is standard, US passport, also standard, but then voters' registration, DMV, and your employer that can vary widely. Just take the time to visit them and find out.

I just have State id (don't drive) is there still something I should do?

State ID is usually issued by the same department as Driver's Licenses. You would just go to the office where you got the state ID, bring along your citizenship certificate and ask them to update their records to show you are now a citizen. It will mean that all of your ID now reflects your true status, plus if you use your ID as identification for something that is for US citizens benefits only, then there won't be a discrepancy that would need to be checked out first.

I didn't update my DL right away and when I registered to vote, I didn't realize that the DDS still had me listed as a PR rather than a citizen. I received a sternly worded letter advising me to provide evidence of my citizenship immediately or they would turn my information over to USCIS for investigation. There was no charge to change the DL and update the information, so even if it is only used for ID purposes, it is still a loose end that you can 'tie up'.:)

I have finally received my oath ceremony invitation. I have to answer questions on the back. Question 4: Have you been arrested, cited, convicted, fined..... Last week I got $126 speeding ticket - should I answer "yes" to that question or "no"?

You left off traffic violations from that question 4 on the N-445. How do you think you answer this question with a recent speeding ticket. Keep in mind the worse sin with the USCIS is not the nature of the offense as much as not disclosing it. They call that lying.

I cheated and learned the number of that form before my wifes' interview and had her read those 8 questions on the rear. Told her until she got her certificate, only drive 2 mph. But I really doubt if the USCIS will make a big deal out of this if she did have a minor traffic violation.

You gave them your 2-year Green Card as well? Big honking mistake. Too late now. Be prepared to explain this to your grand-children one day who are now missing out on one of the coolest heirlooms grandma could have given them. A shame, really.

Anyway, congrats.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Wife surprised me by asking the officer if they could invalidate her ten year card somehow and keep it. After all the stress and frustration we had to go through to get it.

If we had the same day oath, she would have only had it for two weeks, but as it was, she had it for seven weeks. But they said no, she has to surrender it. But at least they have provisions for excessively delaying issuing that ten year card, like the I-551 stamp in your current valid foreign passport or bringing in two passport photos for getting a I-94.

In regards to hanging onto that old stuff, still required to maintain her foreign passport, so hanging unto the past is not so bad. But then she has lots of papers, so can hand over quite a pile when asked to see her papers.

Developed a nice German accent, "here are my papers" after all of this. Most of the time, get a laugh. But is this even funny since we are getting just like Nazi Germany?

Ypu would probably be wise to admit it - perhaps bring a copy with you and if you've already paid - bring the receipt. Can't go wrong with honesty, ever!

I am thinking - why they ask those questions on the back of Oath Invitation? Can they refuse to give me my naturaliz. certificate if I answer yes to one of the questions or reschedule me or something? Out of three years in the sataes that was my first speeding ticket...so mad at myself..

and the notice does not say if answered "yes" please explain below... The question is Have you been arrested, charged, cited, convicted, fined or imprisoned for braking the law??? And when I put "yes" it sounds so terrible.. the notice does not give space to explain thatit was just a speeding ticket..

If something happened between the time you had your interview and were approved and the time you are about to take the Oath of Allegiance that could put serious doubts on your good moral character then, yes, you will not be sworn in that day.

If you were arrested for prostitution, or drugs, or any a crime of moral turpitude, they most likely would wait for the outcome of the case. If you were to be convicted, it would mean a ticket home to the Ukraine, and if the charges were dismissed, they would then allow you to take the Oath at another time.

If they find out with the 2 years following your naturalization that you misrepresented yourself at any time in any way, USCIS can void the naturalization as an administrative process that does not require the signature of a judge. They do not "revoke" your citizenship as that's a big deal; they simply say it was obtained by fraud and thus it was invalid. Like it never happened. Just a daydream.

Ok, BOB. I appreciate your answer.

Let me put it this way:

Could $126.5 speeding ticket "put serious doubts on my good moral character"?

Cause if there is even a slight chance to being re-scheduled. I'd say "screw it" I am not driving (4 hours one way)to Kansas City being 8 months pregnant to be rescheduled. In that case I may get another ticket on my way home..

Hand print speeding ticket, $125.00 fine, six digit date under question 4, just enough space if printed small. Extremely doubt if even an issue will be made out of it, but still have to report it.

If rape was involved in my last speeding ticket, it was me that was raped by these damned cops, giving me a ticket at the bottom of a steep hill when my car creped up to 57 in a 55. Or more recently my daughter-in-law. Put a stupid bar and a tiny church on a state road with a 25 mph speed limit. She did that, but when she saw the 55 mph sign sped up and got a ticket, although this sign was a half mile up the road from that bar. Cop told her, its 25 mph clear up to that 55 mph sign, then she can speed up. Makes me want to leave this damned country for reasons like this. Not reckless or drunk driving, not another vehicle in sight except for a cop hidden behind bushes or whatever.

Even my insurance agent jokes about getting many speeding tickets, always on the road trying to sell policies, and time is money.

When we see a cop on the road, not there to protect us, but to screw us. Since 9/11, they have more than doubled our police department in this half horse town. A crooked attorney ran for judge as every Tuesday morning, well over 200 people in line with various fines. Cops don't have anything else to do. This is America, the home of the free and the brave!

I can hear you, brother. I was driving from the hospital after fasting/having my blood work done. Felt nauceaus and sick wanted to get home quickly - not to start throwing up while driving. I guess that cop can be proud of himself fining a pregnant woman feeling sick.. What else can I say.

Done deal folks - I am officially a US citizen.

Arrived at 1 pm at Fairfax office - waited until my name was called - I handed in my GC, my old 2 yr GC (I didn't have the old EAD or AP) The guy at the wicket said it was no big deal. Had me sign something that looks similar to the citizenship cert (probably their copy).

Waited 10 minutes until they herded us up to the Oath ceremony room. After 20 minutes of speeches, the Oath ,the Pledge of Allegiance and the handing out of the certificates, we were done.

Passed by the SSN office on the way home and changed my citizenship status there, tomorrow I'll take my certificate to work so they can change my status in the HR system and then I'll go get a passport

PS: Lots of people brought too many relatives/friends - please take heed and DO NOT BRING EVERYBODY YOU KNOW - they really should limit it to 2 guests per person. My husband noted that there were at least a few families who brought very small children who did not know how to behave (or maybe it was the parents)and they really should have been left at home - they were honestly a disturbance to the proceedings which are important to those receiving citizenship.

So while people's children ran wild the ceremony tried to continue (don't give me grief - I have 3 of my own and when they were small, I left them at home ;) )

WOW...CONGRATS..

I am scheduled for oath within the month.

I didnt know i will have to update my status at the SSn office and at work with HR...!

Good info,thanks.
