Hello all! I was reading a cover letter done by another applicant who mentioned she self-translated documents, including a note that this was done and she was qualified. Does anyone know if this is acceptable to the USCIS? If so, any ideas on what the wording should look like as far as the translation and qualifications? I am a Spanish teacher and have lived abroad several years, so I would consider myself qualified (I've worked as an interpreter and I'm actually looking into becoming a translator here in Paraguay, but I've got some paperwork to go yet before I can apply!) Thank you!

You or anyone qualified in both languages can do the translations. Include a written statement indicating you are competent to do the work & sign it. Thats really all thats required. There is a sample letter here on V J that can be seen if you type translations in the search block. USCIS web site also has the criteria.

USCIS; yes. Consulate; maybe, maybe not; find out for certain.

A signed attestation statement that states the translation from Spanish to English is accurate and the translator is competent to translate.

This format has been used by many people. It is the USCIS criteria.

Per the USCIS, documents not in English must be translated. The policy states as follows: "All documents that are in a language other than English must be submitted with a translation. The person translating the document must certify that the translation is complete and accurate and that he/she is competent to translate from the foreign language into English."

All translations must include a statement similar to the following:

Certification by Translator:
