Crime drops to nothing if you declare martial law. That doesn't mean that it's a good way to go.

Kind of amazing how some folks from a supposedly civilised country seem to celebrate regimes that have dubious human rights records.

We need to bring back chain gangs and hard labour. Jail is Hell but we need to combine tougher penalties along with education and early diversion programs. Keep the young ones from going bad, make it easier for people who screw up to get back on their feet and we won't have to deal building bigger and more expensive facilities for incarceration. We need to attack the problem on two fronts.

I agree, make prison tougher, just don't kill.

Also, part of the reason we have so much crime is because we keep adding more and more to the books.

How do you make prison toughter - American jails are already places where you lock people up and throw away the key, even for relatively minor crimes.

Gang crime is rife in US jails and the authorities do little more than segregate prisoners by race - they do little to prevent the murders, beatings and rapes that take place.

I have no issue with this, at all - more beheadings in 2012 !! (geez, is that a political plank? Oh wait, no worries about political parties)
