Is this going to be a problem? IRS 2010 filed single but married...

Hello VJs! Im not sure if this is going to be a problem. I got married on May 08, 2010. When I filed for my IRS 2010, I still wrote SINGLE on my status, coz my wife is still not here in the United States didn't have Social Security Number to provide... Is this gonna be a problem when consul see my IRS that I'm still single?

I believe you have the choice to file single or joint, however, by filing jointly it may give you better tax breaks in most cases. I don't think that should be an issue

She didn't have a social Security number that i can provide. So there's no way I can add her as wife or dependant...I hope it's not an issue coz I pay more taxes for filing as single than filing married...

I did the same thing and I don't think it will be a issue. I did write a explanation letter as to why I did not claim her due to the fact she had no social security number and my wife will bring that with her for her interview.

It appears some Embassies/Consulates would use that as a pretext for a refusal while others do not care.

File an amended return. You had two choices: File jointly, or file separately, but you must file as married if you were married on the last day of the tax period.

If you are filing jointly, what are you going to put on her Social Security Number? It still ask on your 1040 form...

She can request an ITN from the Social Security office at the US Embassy, or she can send you a completed W-7.

That's good news! Did you submit IRS transcript only on your I-864? Did you write a letter why you filed single? Please give some info what did you submit on your I-864. Thanks!

Or simply have your wife be prepared to explain, including that you will file an amended return once she's here. Usually this is not an issue in an interview but preparation is the key. I did the same for the same reason but the question was never asked. They see this often.

This is a very emotional issue as you would see if you were to read all the threads earlier this year around tax time, but you have three years to file an amended return to get the larger refund--no muss, no fuss, so hopefully all those who want to jump all over you will just move on to the next thread instead of wasting a lot of valuable electrons.

As pushbrk said, just be prepared to answer the question if asked--the odds of being asked are very small

Thank you so much! I guess, I would just tell that to my wife. Be prepared if CO ask her about this... That I will file an amended return once she get here in USA.I hope it's not a big issue, by filing single and zero dependent, I was taxed more than filing a married status...Maybe, I'll just write a letter and have it notarized and give it to my wife if in case, CO asked this... Thanks magical, I really appreciate all your inputs. I'm just paranoid about this single/married thing. I've been away for my wife for more than a year and can't wait to be with her. I will just tell that to my wife to be prepared and tell to CO to file an amendment return. when she get here. Thanks again to everyone! I really appreciate all your help!
