Hello everyone,

Its been a long journy for me and now im finally in the US. I have been here since April 10 under a K1 visa. Soon right away my wife and I got married. roughly last month i sent away the change of status I-485 and I-765 (early work permit) I thought that was also how i get my SSN card but now after people are telling me that this is something i have to go to the office and do myself. Are they right? i been searching on the furoms and i read that i had to file for the SSN before my I-94 expires. problem is that i think my I-94 expires on July 6th.

can somone guide me to the right way. also is there a fee for the SSN. i just paid $1070 for the adjustment of status so another fee will be a ouch...

another quick question is that, now that im in the states, and about to get a SSN from the states, dopes that mean i get a new fresh credit or even no credit in USA. i came from Canada.

thanks in advance

You have to go to social security office to apply for SSN, you don't get it automatically. If your I-94 is still valid you can go and apply for it, otherwise you will have to wait to get EAD or GC. There is no fee.

From the VJ SSN guide: "Many SSA offices will not allow you to file for a SSN if your I-94 is about to expire (generally 14 days prior to the expiration on your I-94)"

So it's probably too late now. You cannot work anyhow so all the SSN would be useful for really is to add you to your spouse's bank account. You could always go into the SSA office and try to apply anyway I guess. Once you receive your EAD you will be able to apply. No fee for SSN.

I don't know if there's any transfer of credit history from some countries, but in general you start off with no credit.

oh great. i'll quickly go get the SSN taken care of. thanks for all your help and input. i really can't wait until all this visa is final.

You won't be able to get one as you have less than 2 weeks left on your I-94. you'll have to wait for an EAD or GC. No harm in trying but they'll most likely turn you away.
