Islam prohibits all drugs that are not medically prescribed, so there goes that idea...

Wowza, we've got an issue then...

It is estimated that several million people are frequent users of khat. Many of the users originate from countries between Ethiopia,Sudan, Kenya, and Madagascar, and in the southwestern part of the Arabian Peninsula, especially Yemen. In Yemen, 80% of the males and 45% of the females were found to be khat users who had chewed daily for long periods of their life. In Somalia, 61% of the population reported that they do use khat, 18% report habitual use, and 21% are occasional users.

The traditional form of khat chewing in Yemen involves only male users; khat chewing by females is less formal and less frequent. Researchers estimate that about 70–80% of Yemenis between 16 and 50 years old chew khat, at least on occasion, and it has been estimated that Yemenis spend about 14.6 million person-hours per day chewing khat. Local researcher Ali Al-Zubaidi has estimated that the amount of money spent on khat has increased from 14.6 billion rials in 1990 to 41.2 billion rials in 1995. Researchers have also estimated that families spend about 17% of their income on khat.

Diagnose the crazies as crazy and then treat them with weed. We all win.

Just wait til the alcohol lobby gets wind of this. Drug addiction is a public health issue, not a law enforcement one.

They see this as a huge threat in terms of market share.

Thats why they spent so much money lobbying to defeat the california bill last fall. If you can't even pass a decriminalization bill in the most liberal state in the country, I think that speaks loudly. FWIW, most of the people where I work think that it will be legalized in the next 10 years. I however, don't agree.

Yet in a predominantly Republican state such as Alaska, marijuana is legal. I believe it has something to do with Republicans not wanting to run everyone's life and tell them how to eat, sleep, and ####### like ...oh like libs like Pelosi.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Alaska republicans aren't party line republicans, just look at the flourishing seperatist movement up there.

Marijuana was decriminalized in Alaska as a result of a court case. It was RE-criminalized in 1991 by an overwhealming popular vote and remained illegal until the ACLU took up the case in 2004. Former Alaska governor Frank Murkowski was a leading advocate for criminalizing marijuana. So it would seem that it was thanks to the few liberals in your state that it is legal, despite the best efforts of conservatives.

Yep. It defies logic except when looked at as a marketing strategy. No different from what the fossil fuel industry has been doing against renewables.
