You do not send your passport.

What "other papers" are you sending other than the DS-230 and polcie clearance? There is the I-p864 and supporting docs, for starters. The guides are helpful here: http://www.visajourney.com/content/i130guide1

You don't need to send your passport. But make sure to photocopy your passport (just the page with your pic and info). You need to send that.

There is an entire section on the National Visa Center Processing stage that lists all the Original Documents you are required to send. It does state NOT to send anything to NVC unless you are asked for it, BUT applicant is required to bring ALL originals to interview EXCEPT what was already sent to NVC...they do say you need to provide 2 passport sized photos of the applicant(person immigrating), so if you don't send them to NVC you should bring them to interview for sure...this is in addition to the ones you sent to USCIS. Some people need another photo for the medical so I would get atleast 3. You may also want to check the embassy website where your interview will be because for us it seems London wants 3 photos whereas NVC only says 2. It can't hurt to have an extra because nothing would be worse than to have your visa held up at the interview stage just because of a picture. Here's the link I have been trying to memorize. Just remember "applicant" refers to the person immigrating, not the "petitioner" in the NVC stage...I was a bit confused about this at first. Here's the link to dept of state website. Good Luck!
