Hello

Here's my situation. When I got married, I was out of status, that's why I didn't change my last name then. (Social security cannot issue new card without proper ID)

But now, after I'm almost through with the steps in getting a green card (an interview left), I am confused about how I can get it with the new last name.

Today I received Empoyment authorization card. Can I use it to change my ssc? (But I don't have any proof of legal status)

Can I get a state ID after that?

If i do receive a new ssc, can I tell that on the interview, so they'd issue a green card whith the new last name?

But there might not be enough time (Interview is in a month)

Sorry, it's very confusing, but I don't know what I should do myself

I haven't gone thru the whole AOS process yet since I'm just gathering all my paperwork and hopefully mailing it soon, but I can tell u what other VJ-ers advised me,my situation is similar to yours-I'm out of status too,and I cant change my last name now,but I'm filing for my GC in my married name,..anyways some people on VJ told me that once I receive the Empoyment authorization card I can apply for a state ID or drivers license. Now I don't think u r gonna be able to change ur SS card til u get the actual GC because to do so u need not only a form of ID but like u said a status to do that.

Did you write your married name on the forms?

Whether you can change your name depends on your state rules and what you wrote on your marriage licence.

If you didn't write your married name on your AOS forms then your EAD is in your maiden name and you won't be able to change the name on your SSN... well you can try. At the GC interview ask them to change the name to your married name. If they don't then you'll need to file an I-90 once you get your greencard and pay the fee to change your GC.

Lots of things affect the answer. My advice is ask at your GC interview if you can change your name. They'll tell you whether you can or not.
