I've received an e-mail back from the NVC saying "this petition is currently undergoing additional processing" what does this mean? Is this standard wording in their e-mails. Do they really do additional processing of some sort or does processing mean just sending it off to the consulate? Anyone else got a similar message?

What that means is they are doing a more in-depth look at your petition and it could take anywhere from a few days to a month or so. More background checks etc but since this is State Department now, they will also do background checks on the beneficary.

This is standard procedure or are we "special" somehow?

You are "special" :/

Most K-1s are there for 1-4 days just to get the case #, entered in the system and sent off.

Seriously, they do this to everyone, don't make me worry for no reason

What?

You are selected for Additional Processing. This means you will be held up at the NVC, they do not do that for everyone.

The email is pretty much self explainitory. Your case will be looked into more by the State Department. How long that takes is up to them.

Replies in emails almost always consist of:

"Sorry we do not have your petition. It can take up to 2-4 weeks for us to receive it. Please wait"

Or

"Dear Sir/Madam:

Your inquiry has been received at the National Visa Center (NVC). The NVC has completed its processing of the visa petition you mentioned in your letter and has recently been forwarded to the US Embassy/Consulate General. Please allow 10-15 business days for the Embassy/Consulate General to receive the petition.

Any further inquiries should be directed to the assigned US Embassy or Consulate General.

Thanks...I just called them and they said this is standard procedure and EVERYONE goes through it. For some it takes a few days and some a few more. Basically, what it means is that it is in between the stage of being received (it has a case number) but has not been sent out to the embassy yet, i.e. it's being processed.

The "Additional" processing is not done for everyone - That's why its called "additional".

We went through additional processing - we were delayed 50 days - hopefully your's won't be so long. It is believed that those selected for AP are primarily on a random basis so don't assume there is any issue with your case.

Despite their promises to mail me a notice when our case actually was sent on to our consulate they never did. You should call them (once or twice a week) in order to confirm when it has actually been sent on. Good luck.

Good luck.

Then why did they tell me it's standard? I don't mean administrative processing.

Do you have any idea why we are going through additional processing? I see no reason at all, just wondering what would be the basis for being selected for this?

Did you read my reply?? You were most likely randomly selected. Don't sweat it.

FYI: Additional Processing and Administrative processing are the same thing.
