Just got my EAD, do I need to apply for Social Security Number?

I just received my EAD in the mail yesterday! So, I started to apply to jobs online, however I need a social security number. Does my EAD allow me to work even without a SSN? Like, should I go to the store in person and just show them my card? Or do I have to now apply for a SSN? I am pregnant and wanting to get a job as soon as possible to save up. Thank you to everyone who answers/reads this! I really appreciate it.

I'm sure you could get a job with just your EAD but would you like to get paid?

You need the SSN, simply go to the SSA office and apply for one

Good luck

You need an SSN. You go to the local social security administration office to apply for it - If I remember right, it takes 2-3 weeks to arrive. You can call them in a few days after you've applied, check if you have been issued a number, and then go back to the office to get a print out receipt that has the number on it before the actual card arrives. That way you can get the number faster, and accept a job even if the physical card has not arrived yet. Employers need the number, they don't need to see the actual card itself.

The EAD allows you to work but many places are not familiar with the EAD so you may have to explain it. Also I hope you know the laws of the USA when it comes to pregnate women in the work place. Many companies wont hire pregnate people because they must give them leave after the baby is born & allow them to come back to work later. I hope thats not the case for you in your search.

Gosh. They are not allowed to discriminate. Pregnancy is treated as a temporary disability so once you are hired, your employer can not fire you because you are pregnant. Here is what the law says in NY. I am not sure of the laws in your state but suffice it to say that knowledge is power!

Pregnancy is not a disease.

The Pregnancy Discrimination Act provides a framework for how pregnant women should be treated on the job including the following guidelines:

* Pregnant women must be treated the same as other applicants or employees with similar abilities or limitations

* An employer cannot refuse to hire a woman because she is pregnant as long as she is able to perform the job

* An employer can only require pregnant workers to submit a doctor note excusing their inability to work if they require all employees to do the same

* Pregnant employees must be permitted to work as long as they are able to perform their jobs

* Employers must hold open a job for pregnancy-related absences the same length of time jobs are held open for employees on sick or disability leave

* Employees with pregnancy-related disabilities must be treated the same as other temporarily disabled employees with respect to pay and benefits

What you point out is exactly why she may have a tough time getting hired. Her employer becomes subject to those laws. Probably wouldnt be a good idea to begin by quoting the law to them.

The number issued under these circumstances could not be used for employment. She must have the green card to get the social number that will allow her to use it for work.

No, the SSN number issued based off an EAD can be used for employment in conjunction with the EAD. It is a valid number.

You do not need greencard to get SS#. My wife got her SS# in 2-3 weeks with her EAD.

I used her SS# to file income tax. You may not need it, but I got it anyways.

Employer cannot discriminate against sex, religion, pregnancy, race, color, etc... But they don't need to hire you. If you are pregnant, you could be "under qualify" or "over qualify" for the position. That will be their excuse.
