Fiance wanted to bring his computer with him when he moves to the US. Will he be allowed to checked a computer as 1 of his checked baggage? Are there any rules or regulations on checking a computer? Will he be giving a hard time at POE? Just want to know if it worth it? Thanks.

I would check with the Airline first if it's possible to have a computer in your checked luggage. I think all checked luggage must be packed in a way that it can be opened by TSA and then I would be worried, if they opened it, how well it would be packed up again. Immigration at that point doesn't know or care how many or what you have in your checked luggage (well, besides the obvious No No's of course). People are bringing laptops through immigration and customs all the time, why not a desktop (?) computer!?

It might be safer and easier to mail the CPU?

Checked-in the desktop computer. Most airlinines has policy regarding checking in fragile items.

I would suggest to remove the hard drive though and hand carry it if possible.

Here's the DELTA airlines policy, http://www.delta.com/traveling_checkin/baggage/special_baggage/fragile_bulky/index.jsp

Other airlines policy is probably similar. Call the airline your fiance will be using to come to the USA.

I would recommend you use DHL/FedX or UPS to ship the computer.

I have seen a lot of airline "computers" get lost or destroyed in transit.

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

I was going to say the same thing. I packed two laptops on my way to Ghana last time and they were slightly damaged when we opened the bags. Ghana is REALLY rough on lugguage, and yes they can open bags and take things out (How will anyone know who did it??). I would think that packing a CPU would be a little more challenging to secure. I've also mailed laptops to Ghana and found that to be alot less of a headache and have never had one damaged.
