Multiculturalism has failed, says French president

PARIS (AFP) – French President Nicolas Sarkozy declared Thursday that multiculturalism had failed, joining a growing number of world leaders or ex-leaders who have condemned it.

...

"...we do not want... a society where communities coexist side by side."

"If you come to France, you accept to melt into a single community, which is the national community, and if you do not want to accept that, you cannot be welcome in France," the right-wing president said.

"The French national community cannot accept a change in its lifestyle, equality between men and women... freedom for little girls to go to school," he said.

"We have been too concerned about the identity of the person who was arriving and not enough about the identity of the country that was receiving him," Sarkozy said in the TFI channel show.

This agreeing with the Frogs is beginning to get a little concerning

Ugliness will always be universally appealing to certain elements of any society.

The de rigueur governmental intrusions into daily life there

though would have you stomping your little feet in a temper tantrum faster than you can say mais oui.

Man with cat and gun say whaaaat????

I was referring to the Prime Minister of the UK and the French President, representatives of the sides in a rivalry going back over a thousand years and usually a bit less well-natured than the Red Sox and Yankees, agreeing on more and more things recently.

What were you talking about?

These proclamations resemble a drunk, who after falling on the ground says, "I fell down".

Today's American immigration in no way resembles the immigration policies of the past that have often been romanticized into fairy tale stories with no bearing on historical reality. Multiculturalism of today just wasn't tolerated and was discouraged. That is why modern immigration policy in the USA is a failure.

Theodore Roosevelt on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN

"In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag, which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization, just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

Theodore Roosevelt 1907

How soon we forget what worked in the past and what isn't working today.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995
