How exactly did you find your job in the States?

I've over 10 years experience in retail back home in the UK and applied at our local Target store. Had an interview on Monday for a flow team member for overnight shelf stocking... got an email today stating that they were unable to provide me a position. I've had my Greencard 3 months and this is only the second interview I've managed to get and I've sent out too many emails, phone calls, registered with temp agencies etc to even remember. To say I feel like a spare wheel while my USC wife supports us both is an understatement. Fortunately she just got a promotion at work which is great and makes me very proud of her, but just makes me feel even more of a tool as I can't even get a position in retail - one in which I'm qualified for - to help pay the bills. I've never known such a tough job market in all my life, feeling as if you need a degree just to flip a burger at the moment.

As for discrimination against hiring workers who are not born n raised in the US... well after so many rejection interviews/letters it does start to make you wonder.

This is how I'm feeling right now. I had 4 job interviews within a month and then never heard back from them. I could get to interview stage thanks to my 2-year experience of working in a resort in the States. But then after those interviews, I'd never gotten called back even though they said they would ! Those positions I applied for are entry level jobs and I even have experience of them right here in the States. Therefore, I always wonder if there's any racism right there since I'm asian :(. It's really not fair !!

There are many people competting for the same job. As I said before ( I went to a job workforce training), they always suggests to network with friends who might have an opening at their work.

Is it possible to start applying for jobs before getting EAD, then just not start working until you have it? Or is it really not possible to even apply until you have the EAD document in hand?

I had my 1st phone interview the other day and in the middle of it, I was told they don't usually hire "internationally" - probably meaning people from other countries...Isn't that some sort of discrimination?! How rude!

That is discrimination and it is illegal. However, some jobs only can hire USC.

Yes, you can apply for jobs but you must state you are still waiting for your EAD. They cannot hire you until you can legally work.

Staffing agencies is how my companies hires most of their employees. It gives you a chance to get in the door and then prove yourself and your work. I got my job through a "radio resume" thing, random, but great!
