While I read "everything" about dual citizenship and have been doing so for some time, this essay escaped my attention until now, and it's a really good one. Canadians, this is for you as well!

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . Canadians, this is for you as well!

Canadian Citizenship law changed in 2009 and the rules stated specifically related to Canadians in this article are outdated and wrong. For one thing the 28th year rule died with the old law.

I would say a good rule of thumb when you are in the USA naturalized citizens are US, period. When you are in other countries, depends.

Congratulations on your US citizenship, Bob, but are you planning on losing it already?

My wife finally got her Colombian ID card, but its in Colombia, now the problem is to get it here so we can drive down to the Colombian consulate to get her a Colombian passport. Relinquishing her Colombian will not remove her place of birth from her US passport, already checked into that, then dealing with some idiot at their POE.

Its not that she wants dual citizenship, but no choice thanks to our DOS, already went around in circles with them on this issue. Would change her passport to Bogota, but what good would that do since there are only two Bogotas' in the entire world. I am more pissed off at my own country, then Colombia. Place of birth, like you have any choice, and you can't use logic with our government, and it sure isn't government by the people.
