I love maps like this.

I had always imagined that the rapid fall-off in population from the eastern to western US occurs more or less at the Mississippi River.

I see here it does not, it really extends an extra "state-width" further west to a line defined approximately by Sioux Falls - Omaha - KansasCity/Witchita-Oklahoma City- DFW. That's where the empty prairie begins. Neat to see it so sharply in 3D.

I made the same mistake. I also didn't realize how desolate it is in that prarie section of the U.S.
