My husband has just received his green card. He needs to return to his country in order to complete his studies. How long is he permitted to remain outside of the States at one time?

He can be out for up to 12 months without requiring a re-entry permit. A re-entry permit allows him up to 2 years.

Bear in mind any period after 6 months CAN be used against you by CBP to determine if you have abandoned your status.

Any period after 6 months pauses the naturalisation clock, and after 12 months resets it (meaning it will take longer to get citizenship).

ROC (if applicable) will also need to be filed and while possible to be filed overseas, it doesn't exactly look good that he moved back to his home country as soon as he got his GC.

**Edit - LPR means legal permanent resident.. of the United States. Meaning he needs to permanently live in the US. Hopefully he's okay (for your sake) but if he wasn't ready to live in the US he shouldn't have applied for a GC.
