Mother-in-law jokes are no laughing matter.

At least in the eyes of officials in the London borough of Barnet, where they're now officially banned, according to the Telegraph. They're sexist and disrespectful, the council ruled in a 12-page booklet entitled '"Cultural Awareness: General Problems."

While mother-in-law jokes have long been a staple of many a standup comedian's routine as well as an excuse for a little occasionally off-color humor that spouses of all ages enjoy sharing, the Barnet council begs to differ.

'"Humor can be incredibly culture-specific, and is very open to misinterpretation or even offense (sic) by other cultures," the guide says.

'"And don't forget when you don't know what people are laughing at; it is very easy to imagine that they are laughing at you."

Jokes targeted to one's mother-in-law '"as well as offensively sexist in their own right, can also be seen as offensive on the grounds that they disrespect elders or parents," the edict states.

Women outnumber men by 170,000 to 161,500 in Barnet, which is the second largest population of the 33 London boroughs, according to The Telegraph.

Whether the outnumbered men wish they could still share some guffaws by telling mother-in-law jokes is unclear, but at least one writer is not happy with Barnet. The writer John Sessions accused it of having a '"sense of humor bypass."

Wow. Pretty soon life will be perfect in UK once they ban everything bad and/or objectionable.

If the government is going to force me to exercise my "right" to health care, then they better start requiring people to exercise their Right to Bear Arms. - "Where's my public option rifle?"

Despite everyone's stereotypes of UK or specifically England (leave it to Americans to be clueless about geography) Britons seems to be living a relaxed and enjoyable life. A month of break a year, 38 hours work week, free world-class healthcare, and lots of help from government in paying for basic needs contribute to a awesome life. You should visit England sometimes. You'll like it.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

I'm sorry, is England not a part of UK anymore?

And you're right, Americans are clueless about geography. Why? Because they can be. They're the only ones on earth that don't need to look to another country to see what they should be doing.

Britons seems to be living a relaxed and enjoyable life.

Minus mum-in-law jokes.

A month of break a year, 38 hours work week,

So that's why you guys are so productive!

free world-class healthcare, and lots of help from government in paying for basic needs contribute to a awesome life.

When you say "free" do you mean all the way free as in, "the queen mother pays for it" or are you saying free like, as in, "we don't even pay taxes or anything and our big, all-seeing, benevolent government provides all this stuff at no cost what-so-ever?"

Which is it?

Or are you saying "free" as in, "after we pay around 35% of our salary (from our 38 hour work week and one month off a year job) to the queen mum she graces us with "free" healthcare?

You should visit England sometimes. You'll like it.

Been there, done that. And you're right. I liked it. Liked visiting, anyway. Can't really understand why anyone would want to live in a state that disarms it's own people and wouldn't allow them to tell jokes about their mothers-in-law.

  • 2 weeks later...

You don't seem to know how things in England actually work (with taxes, health care, royal family, etc) so perhaps stick to what you do know, and go and play with your guns.
