We used to use MagicJack but once Anna was here the need for a running computer at that end was a killer as her Mom is elderly and not interested in computers.

We found Nettalk early enough to have 2 of their units with the unlimited lifetime subscription (paid $100 upfront and will have service for the life of the company). now it's about $100 a year but the quality is better than MagicJack and it is a stand alone unit (like Vonage) so no PC required that that end. We're pleased with it .

We are using Vonage for more than 1 year now and so far, we like their service. I never heard of Nettalk, I'll go search for it and yeah, thanks for sharing about it :)

We have been using MJ since the beginning of this year. We speak to each other just about every morning (& sometime we speak 2-3 times a day) - my wife is also my alarm clock :P Mine too she insists that she call to wake me.

e get very good voice quality, I can hear everything in the background, even the people on the street talking/playing & the roosters. :D

People have been talking about the issues that they have/had but we haven't encounter any....yet. Maybe it is because of our connections - She have broadband & I use Optimum Voice.

Also for call details records - I do it on my end via Optimum Voice. Optimum Voice records every call I make & received, I sorted the call records by caller, then I printed out the report showing all calls made to & from the MJ. I also included an explanation about the MJ - who we communicate on it, who is using it, etc, ect, ect,.

We talk for hours each day and the quality is very good.

I don't like MJ. Personally, I like Skype better, because when I travel, all I have to do is find a computer with an internet and hopefully a headset and a camera, and we can talk. Skype is an all-in-one solution for me, because when I'm on the computer, I can either call his cellphone/landline or call his Skype on his computer where he also has his webcam. Skype is even available on some cellphones and tablets now (even pocket organizers with wifi), so you can also go online on those gadgets and carry it all around with you. Call logging is also good, for both Skype-to-Skype calls and calls to and from a regular phone.

I've got an unlimited subscription on it for US and Canada (and for a time, even World), before I met David. I use it to make business calls all over the world, and also to call friends and family. I even got an online number that he can call from his cellphone or any landline (so he doesn't have to pay for long distance calls) and I'd get it on my PC, which by the way has a caller ID on Skype so I see the numbers that call me as compared to getting international calls in my cellphone which usually just says "Unknown Number" even with the caller ID on. As my PC is almost always open 24/7 anyway, with speakers on, I can hear his calls even when I am in bed or in the kitchen or in the bath.

The best convenience I get from Skype as compared with the other services is the fact that I don't have to carry a gadget with me when I travel, and I could easily just go to a neighborhood internet cafe to make or receive calls, as I do travel a lot on some months and I am sometimes too lazy to carry my netbook around (or I would run out of batteries). As for my transcript/logs, I just copy my profile folder from the Skype Documents & Settings folder, put it on a flashdrive, copy and paste it on another computer that I am using, then that computer will now have all the contacts and logs of everything I have on my PC for Skype. I do the same for YM. Then, before I log out or pack my bags, I cut and paste it back again to my flashdrive, or zip it and email it to myself (in case my flashdrive is lost), and I copy and paste it over my chat archives/logs in my PC here in my apartment. When I log in, I've still got everything in my archives/logs and it looks like I never left the house at all.

We bought a Magic Jack a year ago and even though it's not our main channel of communication, we will continue to pay for it since it's very cheap and provides a US phone#. We mostly just text during the day, and then chat and talk on skype at night.

I believe that the content of this thread is not specific to the Philippines since Magic Jack is used worldwide. This thread will likely be useful to members of VJ from many countries, not just the Philippines.
