My husband and I are researching whether we can get health insurance while adjusting status in Virginia. Anybody has got any experiences?

Thank you for any information that you can provide us with! :)

He should be able to add you to his plan without any problem. I've never heard of anyone having issues being added to their spouse's insurance without having a GC yet. I got married in May and was added to my spouses plan at the beginning of July....only issue I had is that they made us backpay from the wedding day as according to them I was 'covered' as of then.

Private health insurance is usually no problem. Most insurance companies will insure anybody for the right price.

Employer provided health insurance is usually not a problem, but it depends on the employer's and insurance company's rules. Some VJ members have reported problems with being added to their spouse's insurance without an SSN. One member (that I can recall) reported a problem with the employer insisting on having proof of immigrant status (as opposed to non-immigrant status).

One member's husband came on a CR1 visa and her company wouldn't let her add her husband after he arrived because they didn't consider immigration to be a "life changing event". Marriage, on the other hand, IS a life changing event, but they wouldn't cover her husband until after he arrived in the US. By that time, it had been too long since the marriage to qualify as a "life changing event" according to her employer's policies. She ended up having to wait until the next open enrollment.

If you're looking to get health insurance through your husband's employer then he needs to check their requirements. For most people, it isn't a problem.

12/29/2009 - Married in Oakland, CA!

08/18/2010 - AOS Interview - APPROVED!

Not the case with me. Hubby has Federal Employee Health Care. The customer service at the plan said we needed to fax a copy of the health insurance plan and that would be it but that was misinformation. I have to have my ssn before i can be added to his.
