Similar viruses I work with in lab can begin replicating and expressing their reporter proteins in a matter of hours at the site of intended infection. And this is 1µl of virus/10g tissue infected. Imagine (ewwww) what kind of viral load is contained in a used condom.

"Is that a rhetorical point, or would you like to do the math?" :P

We could do the math!

I'll look it up...

Average semen load: 2250µl

Average HSV load titer: 62 pfu/ml (1pfu, plaque forming unit = 1 viral particle capable of infecting 1 cell); so

62pfu/ml = 62pfu/1000µl * 2250µl = 139.5pfu in that condom, based on the averages only, after it was used. Some of that viral titer is likely lost due to exposure to air.

haha gross

I thought STD's couldn't live for long outside of the body. That semen was at least a day old by the time he ate it.

 That just sounded so gross

If the condom was wrapped up, and not much air could get in... its likely there could be enough cells to keep the virus going for a little while if the temperature was warm and humid enough.

But statistically, you're more likely right.

This whole line of conversation is making me ill. My God, I just can't imagine what my reaction would be if this were my kid.

if you gave your info (receipt #s, full name, etc) to anyone on VJ under the guise that they would "help" you through the immigration journey with his inside contacts (like his sister at USCIS) ... please contact OLUInquiries@dhs.gov, and go to http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact to report anything suspicious. Contact your congressman and senator's offices as well.
